Social Action
A diabetes awareness education program for people at munirka was very important so we
decided to conduct diabetes awareness camp in munirka and adjoined area of munirka . The
social Action aims to increase people's awareness of diabetes and key indicators of risk factors of
complications from diabetes. In munirka , this programme was held on the community hall
The mission of camps specialized for children and youth and adult with diabetes is to allow for a
camping experience in a safe environment. An equally important goal is to enable children with
diabetes to meet and share their experiences with one another while they learn to be more
personally responsible for their disease. For this to occur, a skilled medical and camping staff
must be available to ensure optimal safety and an integrated camping/educational experience.
Our work has direct application in reaching out to over large number of people to work
Prevention, Awareness, Counseling and Evaluation Diabetes program (PACE). The increased risk
for developing T2DM and the high prevalence of T2DM risk factors in Delhi and all areas in
Delhi must urgently addressed. Lifestyle interventions are an effective and cost-effective means
for preventing T2DM. There is a need for an effective lifestyle intervention in Delhi for the
prevention of T2DM, and munrika in Delhi is the ideal location to develop such an intervention.
The Ajwels team, with experience in diabetes screening and prevention in delhi, proposes a
randomized translation trial of a DPP-like intervention for the prevention of T2DM in India
which is culturally appropriate, low-cost, community-based, scalable and sustainable. With the
help of the NGO, using their network this plan would be implemented in munirka benefitting
around 2000 people.
Along with FWS of ajwels we reached munirka , located near RK Puram Sector 4 , Ajwels just
completed the Prevention, Awareness, Counseling and Evaluation Diabetes program (PACE), a
large four-phase project that: RK Puram Sector 2 , increased diabetes awareness by distributing
educational materials to people residing in RK puram sector 2 ;
performed large-scale diabetes and pre-diabetes screening on over people with free blood sugar
tests; and implemented an exercise program for diabetes prevention. The exercise intervention,
which randomized study centers to receive training on yoga, walking, both yoga and walking, or
neither (controls centers), showed that exercise interventions are both possible and effective in
this population. The program, although short, showed that walking alone significantly decreased
fasting plasma glucose (unpublished data).
Diabetes materials, developed specifically for PACE and including a diabetes documentary,
posters, and booklets, are valuable resources .
We try to touch the following Aspect in this programme

Live in munirka and have a confirmed age greater than or equal to 25

A BMI 22 kg/m2 and/or a waist circumference >90 cm for men and >80 cm for
women
No prior diabetes diagnosis, except for gestational diabetes
A high risk of developing diabetes (pre-diabetes) as defined by a casual capillary glucose
greater than or equal to 120 (measured during screening) AND Baseline fasting glucose
of 100-125 mg/dL and/or 2-hour post-load glucose of 140-199 mg/dL
Not pregnant and no history of heart disease, serious illness, cancer diagnosis in the last
five years, or other conditions that may impede or prohibit participation
Willingness to consent to randomization The plan to enroll Indian men and women with
a BMI22 kg/m2

The Intervention
Control Arm: Participants randomized to the control group received standard lifestyle advice.
They asked to attend one group class where they will learn basic information on diabetes
prevention, weight loss, diet, and exercise consistent with expert recommendations for a healthy
lifestyle, including losing 5-10% of their excess body weight, following standard dietary
recommendations to reduce calorie and fat intake, and exercising at least 150 minutes per week.
Control participants received publicly available literature (flyers, brochures, etc.), which are
consistent with the information given in class. The control participants will have no contact with
study staff besides the one class and at study testing days.
The key components of the lifestyle intervention are:
1. Lay Interventionists: we were brifed about the training on lifestyle coaching, diabetes
prevention, and diet and exercise change by members of the study staff. we trainee assisted in
teaching lifestyle classes and provide support and guidance to participants. The Ajwels recruited
more trainee at least 12 lay interventionists during months 1-6 of the programme.
2. Lifestyle Classes: Participants attended group lifestyle classes weekly during the intervention
period and biweekly during the maintenance period. The DPP lesson plans was used as a starting
point for developing culturally appropriate lifestyle curricula. During the intervention period,
classes will focus on diabetes, diabetes prevention, increasing physical activity/decreasing
sedentary activities, and making diet and behavior modifications for weight loss and disease
prevention. Recommended diet modifications was focused on decreasing total calories and fat by
avoiding fried foods and sugar sweetened
beverages, increasing fiber intake, reducing glycemic load mainly by switching from refined
white rice to unrefined brown rice, and reducing sugar intake. Maintenance period lifestyle
classes was covered maintaining weight loss and continuing lifestyle changes made during the
intervention period.
Professional nutritionists and fitness instructors from Ajwels and nutrition guided DPP
modifications and was referring to information published by the American Dietetics Association
on general nutrition, the Association of Physicians of Indian Origin on nutrition for Indian diets,

and guidelines on the management of diabetes from the Indian Council of Medial Research.
Local resources, such as Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India, will also be consulted.
All classes was held at munirka community halll and was team-taught by a professional health
educator and a trained lay interventionist.
3. Aerobic Exercise Component: Participants in the intervention arm was asked to exercise at
least 150 minutes per week, in addition to their normal activity. The exercise intervention
component was designed to increase adherence and acceptability by creating a program of
activity that is flexible and culturally appropriate. Participants was asked to walk on their
own or with walking groups organized by the ajwels team and led by a lay interventionist at least
three times per week. Walking shown to be an effective exercise for decreasing diabetes risk.
Participants allowed to do alternate forms of aerobic exercise if they chose. A culturally
appropriate aerobics DVD, (developed by Aarti Patel) using Indian styles of dance, was modified
and made available as another exercise option.
4. Stretching and Strength Training Exercise Component: participants taught to include
stretching and strength training exercises after every workout. At group walking classes, the lay
interventionist was lead the group in resistance-type, strength training exercises (using their own
body weight to gain muscle strength) and yoga-style stretching. The Lead Fitness Instructor (Mr.
Balaji) was thought several one-hour classes on yoga-style stretching and strength training each
week. The strength training will focus on teaching participants to use every day objects (i.e. food
cans or sand bags) as weight training tools. At a minimum, participants must attend these classes
biweekly during the intervention period and monthly during the maintenance period.
5. Peer Support Groups: Participants in the intervention group was placed into peer support
groups of 4-6 people. This type of buddy system shown to increase compliance in
intervention studies and cross-sectional studies of exercise participation. The Task Force on
Community Preventive Services strongly recommends mechanisms to increase social support
networks, including pairing participants with exercise buddies, as a means to increase physical
activity. The support groups will be encouraged to talk to one another outside of class to offer
support. Members of the peer groups was worked together during small group activities in the
lifestyle classes

Orientation Visit

1 CRY
I visited cry at Head Office Delhi which is located at , 632, Lane No.3, Westend Marg, Near Saket
Metro Station, Said-ul-Ajaib New Delhi - 110 030.and collected information on the cry .In 1979
Rippan and 6 friends started CRY with Rs. 50/- around his mother's dining table. They felt that something
needed to be done to improve the situation of the underprivileged Indian child. Uncharacteristically,
given their backgrounds and motivations, they chose not to found a grassroots-level implementing
organisation working directly with and for underprivileged children. They opted instead to make CRY a
link between the millions of Indians who could provide resources and thousands of dedicated people and
organisations at the grassroots-level who are struggling to function for lack of them. This "link" or
enabling position has determined CRY's strategic choices at every juncture - from the fundraising
methods it employs, to the nature of its relationship with the NGOs it partners.

VISIONMISSION

To enable people to take responsibility for the situation of the deprived Indian child and so
motivate them to seek resolution through individual and collective action thereby enabling
children to realise their full potential
To make people discover their potential for action and change
To enable peoples' collectives and movements encompassing diverse segments, to pledge their
particular strengths, working in partnership to secure, protect and honour the rights of India's
children

Resource Generation
Fundraising or Resource Generation, as we call it in CRY, is driven with a social justice agenda. Our
primary role is to channelize public action for child rights, in the form of financial and material resources
and time and skills. CRYs endeavour is to get the maximum number of people and organisations
involved, driving a people's movement for the rights of India's underprivileged children.
Marketing tie-ups with corporations, events, school and college workshops, media campaigns, signature
drives, advocacy campaigns, the Internet and street theatre ensure that people everywhere can access
information on the situation of India's children and avenues to get involved. Every fundraising venture
from greeting cards to web marketing integrates revenue objectives with advocacy for children.

CRY is almost entirely funded by individual donors who are people from every walk of life and every
corner of the country.
In addition to this, Corporate or Institutional partnerships have added more zeal to our work and been an
opportunity for the development sector (grant making) and the corporate sector to come together and
learn from each other.
Today, we have a strong and committed community of lakhs of donors across the globe who shares our
vision for the future of our children and you too can be a part of this movement.

2 SMILE FOUNDATION
I visited smil foundation located at Office V-11, Level - 1, Green Park Extension,
New Delhi - 110 016 they are a national level development organisation directly benefitting more
than 300,000 underprivileged children, youth and women annually through 158 projects in thematic areas
of education, healthcare, youth employability and empowerment of women and girls across 25 states of
India.
VISION
Work as a catalyst in bringing change in the lives of thousands of underprivileged and marginalised
children, youth and women, by addressing their basic needs.
Enable the civil society across the world to engage proactively in the change process through the
philosophy of civic driven change.
Adopt highest standards of governance to emerge as a leading knowledge and technology driven,
innovative and scalable international development organisation.
WORK
Placing children, their family and community at the centre stage of our development initiatives, we began
our journey in 2002. Education of underprivileged children was the core area of focus as it is the key to
addressing human development issues like poverty, healthcare, unemployment, population control, human
rights, etc. Thus Mission Education, a programme providing elementary education to underprivileged
children, was developed.
A child getting educated needed to be healthy. Studies have shown linkages between health and
education. The health of a child is dependent on the health of his/her family, particularly the mother. Thus
a mobile healthcare programme, Smile on Wheels was started, providing preventive and affordable
curative healthcare services to people in remote areas and urban slums.
APPROACH
Their approach was initially broad based on the innovative concept of Social Venture Philanthropy,
adapted from the successful business model of venture capital. Under this model, we partnered with
emerging and committed grassroots organisations for reaching out to underprivileged communities
through education and healthcare of children. The grassroots organisations were further hand-held for
sustainability, scaling up and leadership. Gradually a need was felt for a holistic life cycle approach.
Realising that the well-being of children is intertwined with their family and community, we adopted the
integrated model of development, weaving initiatives like education for children, healthcare for people,
skill enhancement for youth, and empowerment of women and girls. This model was implemented
through a two-pronged approach of working through community based organisations as well as direct
implementation of our development initiatives.

Deepalayan, role models to children of DelhiThe Delhi Child Rights Club (DCRC) was set up by
Butterflies, a registered voluntary organisation, on 10th December 1998 with the objective of making
Delhi a safe and child friendly state. This club enables children to come together and find ways to
increase awareness about child rights and responsibilities. Deepalaya is one of the 15 members of the
Delhi Child Rights Club.
Vision and Mission
Vision A society based on legitimate rights, equity, justice, honesty, social sensitivity and a culture of
service in which all are self-reliant.

Mission
We at Deepalaya commit ourselves To identify with and work along the economically and socially deprived, the physically and
mentally challenged - starting with children, so that they become educated, skilled and aware.
Enable them to be self-reliant and enjoy a healthy, dignified and sustainable quality of life
And to that end, act as a resource to and collaborate with other agencies - governmental or nongovernmental, as well as suitably intervene in policy formulation.
Deepalaya is Smiling Girls at Deepalaya School in GolekuanDeepalaya is a non - government
development organization working on issues affecting the urban and rural poor, with a special focus on

children. It is because 'Every child deserves a chance' that the organization exists and works towards
making that possible. For the past 28 years Deepalaya has been working in the urban slums of Delhi and
has also made inroads into rural development in the states of Haryana and Uttarakhand. Deepalaya has
been collaborating with other agencies, both governmental and non-governmental towards making
meaningful intervention in the policy making process in the State. From the humble beginnings in 1979,
Deepalaya has seen a continuous growth in staff, beneficiaries and fields of activities. Furthermore, its
support base has grown from a close circle of friends to an international network of individuals,
corporations and agencies. As a consequence, Deepalaya supporters have established foreign outlets in
various countries in order to make use of local tax-exemption facilities and extend the visibility of the
organisation across borders. To get to know Deepalaya more closely, you can read about our Mission and
Vision, download some of our recent publications.

4. Pratham

I visited Pratham office at B- 4/58, Second Floor , Delhi, Safdarjung Enclave, New Delhi
Pratham is the largest non governmental organisation working to provide quality education to the
underprivileged children of India. Pratham was established in 1994 to provide education to the children in
the slums of Mumbai city. Since then, the organization has grown both in scope and geographical
coverage.
Today we reach out to millions of children living both in rural and urban areas through a range of
interventions. The Pratham team comprises of educationists, development professionals, media personnel,
corporates, workers, activists, PhDs, MBAs, CAs, civil servants, bankers, corporate professionals,
consultants, who all bring their experiences and perspectives to the organsiation and are unified by the
common vision of improving the future of our children.
Pratham Open School
Dropouts get a chance to return to education
Completing secondary schooling is still a problem in India because of poor elementary schooling
combined with lack of access to secondary schools. Plus, in many communities, girls after a certain age
are not allowed to receive education or for that matter to even step out of the house. Pratham Open School
gives dropout students a chance to complete their education and acquire skills for employment. In
exchange, they are also expected to teach a group of school aged children. These dropout trainees are
likely to be more dedicated and effective than other volunteers since they themselves are in a yearlong
intensive program to learn and train. These trainees can work with primary school children or pre-school
children on a daily basis.
Objectives of the program:
Changing socio-economic beliefs: By teaching children at higher levels of the schooling system,
there is a certain system of belief that we instill in society. From being used to seeing girl children
dropping out of the school system, they will now start seeing girl children clearing the secondary
schooling system. This will lay the foundation to equality of various kinds gender being an
important one.
Increased capacity of girls: The concepts that will be taught to them will be beneficial not just
for the secondary school examination but will also help them further their education and
employability post std. X.

Increased coverage: In States like UP and Bihar where the number of children in a village is
high and where the learning level of children is low, such an additional force of volunteers will be
highly beneficial to the program. The coverage will increase greatly.

Increased sustainability: Pratham wants to provide more grounded holistic support create an
environment which is sort of self-supporting. By creating a structure where older children are
taught who in-turn teaches younger children, there is a support system created. This makes the
program more sustainable. It is a two-way approach working from both ends thus substantially
increasing the learning level across the village.

Coverage 2012:

Villages Covered: 100

Secondary School Dropouts Trained: 100

Primary School Going children taught by Trainees: 1000

5 CONCERN INDIA FOUNDATION

I visited CONCERN INDIA FOUNDATION at A-52 Amar Colony, Lajpat Nagar IV, New Delhi 110 024. Concern India Foundation is a registered non-profit, public charitable trust working towards
HELPING PEOPLE HELP THEMSELVES by making the disadvantaged self-reliant and enabling them
to lead a life of dignity. Set up in 1991, Concern India Foundations extends financial and non-financial

support to grassroots NGOs working in the areas of Education, Health and Community
Development.Through our efforts, today we support close to 270 grassroots NGOs reaching out to over
2,75,000 marginalised people through our offices in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad,
Kolkata and Pune.
We strongly believe that the disadvantaged need opportunities, not charity. We aspire to bring about a
positive transformation in the lives of the most vulnerable section of our society.
With this purpose we provide both financial and non-financial support to grassroots NGOs that show a
high level of commitment to their work, but lack the time and expertise to raise the relevant resources and
support. We work to bridge the gap between NGOs, corporates and individuals who wish to support
developmental work in the country, thus enabling the NGOs to concentrate on their core activities.
With 20 years of experience in the field, we provide a reliable means to ensure that donors funds are
utilised to their maximum possible potential.
Our policy of identification, monitoring and evaluation is our key strength. Each of our offices has a team
of Masters in Social Work (MSWs) that identifies the NGOs for support, monitors to ensure that the funds
are being used as per plan. The team also evaluates the programmes on a regular basis to ascertain that the
funds are being used to their maximum possible potential.
As a support organisation, we at Concern India Foundation provide financial and non-financial aid to
several grassroots organisations. Over our 20 years of operation, we have developed an rigorous process
of identifying, monitoring and evaluating the programmes we support. Our monitoring and evaluating
skills help us in the judicial disbursal of funds and tracking the work of the programmes.
Our all-embracing approach ensures that through the programmes we support, we reach out to diverse
target groups that include children, special children, women, men and elderly from the marginalised
sections of the society and help them lead a life of dignity.
We identify programmes based on three core issues:
Education
Health
Community Development
