Course Objective and topics:

Introduce modeling, analysis, and simulation techniques for the design of vibratory systems:
identification and prevention of unwanted oscillations or engineering of the desired oscillations
in mechanical systems, civil structures, biomechanical systems, and microelectromechanical
systems. Major topics include the following:

ENME 361 - Fall 2016

Modeling of physical systems

Harmonic and transient excitation of single degree-of-freedom systems
Time-frequency domain equivalence
Analysis of multiple degree-of-freedom systems
Vibration absorption and attenuation techniques

You will learn how to do the following:

1. Model vibratory systems as combinations of springs, masses, and dampers
2. Analyze and interpret the response of mechanical systems to various types of excitation
3. Predict qualitatively the response of systems based on the spectral content of the
excitation
4. Minimize the effects of transient and harmonic excitations on systems and their support
structures
Course Outline:
1. Preliminaries of Dynamics (Chapter 1)
2. Modeling of Vibratory Systems (Chapter 2)
3. Free Vibration of Single Degree-of-Freedom Systems (Chapters 3-4)
4. Periodic & Transient Vibrations of Single Degree-of-Freedom Systems (Chapters 5-6)
5. Multiple Degree-of-Freedom Systems (Chapters 7-8)
Grading:
Final grades will be determined in the following form:

Final Grade 30% (Final Exam Grade)

40% (Midterm Exam Grades)
+10% (Quiz Grades)
20% (Homework Grades )
Your final grade is based almost entirely on your demonstrated proficiency of the subject as
determined by your grades on the examinations and homework assignments. Questions regarding
grading of an exam must be resolved within ten days from the time the graded exam is returned.
Criteria for Homework:

All homework assignments are due at the beginning of class on the day specified.
Late homework submissions will be accepted only under extenuating circumstances;
otherwise, late submissions as well as missed assignments will receive a score of zero.
Each problem must be completed neatly on a separate one-sided sheet of paper. Every
homework sheet must be stapled and have a full name and page number. Neatness
counts!

ENME 361 - Fall 2016

All homework is to be completed individually. Copying homework solutions from the

solution book is not allowed, which will result in a score of zero.
Questions regarding grading of homework must be resolved within ten days from the
time the graded assignment is returned.
The graded assignments and quizzes from the most recent two weeks will be returned
during Soophias office hours.

Grading of Exams
The exams will be graded & the exam books will be handed back one week after the
exam date.
Solution of the exams will be posted on www.elms.umd.edu one week after the exam
date.
Questions regarding grading the exams must be resolved within ten days from the
time the graded exam is returned.
Make-up exams must be arranged ahead of time with a VALID EXCUSE.
Academic Honesty
"The University of Maryland, College Park has a nationally recognized Code of Academic
Integrity, administered by the Student Honor Council. This Code sets standards for academic
integrity at Maryland for all undergraduate and graduate students. As a student you are
responsible for upholding these standards for this course. It is very important for you to be
aware of the consequences of cheating, fabrication, facilitation, and plagiarism. For more
information on the Code of Academic Integrity or the Student Honor Council, please visit

Other Information:

1. Use of MATLAB software will be needed for certain assignments
