ME 261-Strength of Materials

FALL-2016
HOMEWORK10.10.2016
PROBLEM 1 :

The force acts on the gear tooth. Determine the resultant internal loadings on
the root of the
tooth, i.e., at the centroid point A of section aa.

PROBLEM 2 :

PROBLEM 3 : Three 18-mm-diameter steel bolts are to be used to attach the

steel plate shown to a wooden beam. Knowing that the plate will support a 110kN load and that the ultimate shearing stress for the steel used is 360 MPa,
determine the factor of safety for this design.

PROBLEM 4:

A steel pipe of 300 mm outer diameter is fabricated from

8mm-thick plate by welding along a helix that forms an angle
of 200 with a plane perpendicular to the axis of the pipe.
Knowing that a 250 kN axial force P is applied to the pipe,
determine the normal and shearing stresses in directions
respectively normal and tangential to the weld.
