ERAU

Erau is from Kutai Language and it means is crowded, noisy, and


joyful atmosphere. The definition of Erau is the activities that are
done by group of people which have wishes and those activities
are sacred, ritual, and also entertainment.
For the first time, Erau is held on Tijak Tanah Ritual and bath on
the banks ritual when Aji Batara Agung Dewa Sakti is 5 years old.
After he is adult and he is crowned to be the first King of Kutai
Kartanegara (1300-1325), so The Ritual of Erau is held. After that
The Ritual of Erau is always held in every replacement or
coronation the King of Kutai Kartanegara.
On its development, The Ritual of Erau is not only for coronation
the King of Kutai Kartanegara, but also to give the title from the
King to figures and leaders of community who are helpful the
kingdom.
The Ritual of Erau is held by relatives of Kingdom and it invites
all of figure of communities that serve the Kingdom. They come
from all district of kingdom and they bring stock. In this Ritual of
Erau, Sultan and his family provide the banquet to his
communities and serve nicely as a thank you.

After the end of Kingdom of Kutai Kartanegara on 1960 and its


territory become autonomy district. The tradition of Erau is still
preserved as routine agenda of Kutai region in other to
commemorate the Tenggarong town, the capital city of Kutai
Kartanegara Kingdom since 1782.
