largewood,steel,orconcretepilestosupportthemabovethewater.Pipe
docksaresimilartopiledocks.However,thedeckandframereston1.5
to3inchdiametermetalpipesratherthanonlargepiles.Themetalpipes
restonsupportsplacedontheboomofthewaterway.Many
commerciallyproducedoatingdocksareavailable.Theseproductsare
easytopurchaseandassembleandareusuallylessexpensivethan
buildingadockfromscratch.Acantileverdocktypicallyreliesonthe
shorelineoronashorelinestructureforitsentireanchorage.Somedocks
mayhaveintermediatesupportsveryclosetotheshoreline.Theendofa
cantileverdockjutsoutoverthewater,appearingtooatonair.
Cantileverdocksaresuitableforalmostanytypeofenvironmentand
haveaverysmallenvironmentalfootprint.Theshorelineanchorageand
framingmustbestrongenoughtosupporttheweightofthedockandits
users.Acribisaframeworkoflargetimbers(madeofadurablewood
suchasDouglasr,larch,orhemlock)lledwithrocks.Timbers

meanstheholdingofavesselbymeansofamooringbuoyorsimilar
devicewhichisfastenedtoastationaryunderwaterdevicethatisnot
carriedaboardthevesselasregularequipment.Mostsmallcraft

systems.Fenderpileshavethetaskofelasticallyabsorbingtheramming
impactofashipduringberthingandofprotectingfromdamagethe
shipshullontheonehandandthequaysorotherharbourstructureson
theotherhand.Itisthereforeessentialforafenderpiletobeelasticon
theonehandbuttoalsohavesucientlyhighstrengthontheotherhand
inordertoresisttherammingimpact.Apartfromthewoodenorsteel
fenderpilesknownfromtimeimmemorial,therearealsoconcretefender
pileswhichareprestressedintheirlongitudinaldirectionwithsteel
prestressingmembers.Althoughtheseconcretepilesfullltheirpurpose,
theyonlyhavealowdurability,sincetheprestressingmembers,in
particularwhenthefenderpilesareusedinseaports,aresubjectedto
veryseverecorrosionduetotheeectsoftheatmosphereandseawater.
Sincethefenderpilesareintendedtodeformduringtheramming
impact,cracksinevitablyoccurintheconcretethroughwhichwaterand
airandalsoaggressivegasespresenthereincanreachtheprestressing
steelmembersandquicklydestroythem.Inaddition,sincetheelasticity
oftheprestressingmembersmadeofhighstrengthsteelsislimited,the
deformationofthepipesundertherammingimpactisrelativelyslightso
thatthefenderpilesthemselvesmusthavearelativelyhighstrength,in
ordertobeabletoabsorbtherammingimpactsactingonthem.

structures.Mooringorbreastingstructuresareknowninthemaritime
artsforguidingandsecuringvesselstoaxedlocationonabodyof
waterforloading,unloadingorstorage.Oneparticulartypeofmooring
orbreastingstructure,knownasadolphin,consistsofgroupsofelongate
pileshavingarstenddrivenintothebedunderlyingthebodyofwater
andasecondendextendingabovethebodyofwaterforcontactingthe
vessel.Ideally,inordertoavoiddamagetoeitherthevesselorthe
dolphinuponavesselimpactingthedolphin,thedolphinmustpossess
considerablepowersofresistanceandalsoahighdegreeofelasticity.
Duringberthingashipcanimpactandseverelydamagethebreasting
dolphinsorpier.Likewise,onceberthed,themotionofwavescancause
theshiptoimpactoratleastcyclicallybearagainstthebreasting
dolphinsinamannerlikelytocausedamage.Inordertominimize
damagewhichmightoccurincidenttotheexertionofdynamicforces
duetoimpactsorwavemotion,itmaybeadvantageoustoprovide
dockingfenderstodissipatetheenergyofthecyclicforcesandthereby
protectthebreastingdolphinsandthehullofaship.Someformof
fenderingorprotectivebumpersystemhasbeenutilizedtodissipate
kineticenergiesimpartedfromaoatingvesselintoarelatively
stationarymooringorberthingfacility.Suchdevicesmayrangefromthe
expedientutilizationofawornouttirecasingtoelaborateelastomeric
cellularfenderingunitsofavariantandoftenintricateconguration.
Shipsmaybemooredduringloadingandunloadingtomooring
dolphins.Thesemooringdolphinsconsistessentiallyoflarge,slender
towersextendingfromtheoorofthebodyofwaterupwardlyto
protrudeadesireddistanceabovethewater.

impactofavehicle,thebollardneedstobefullyembeddedintoa
concretestripfoundationthatisseveralfeetdeep.Bollardpullisan
industrystandardusedforratingtugcapabilitiesandisthepullingforce
impartedbythetugtothetowline.Itmeansthepowerthatanescorttug
canapplytoitsworkingline(s)whenoperatinginadirectmode.Direct

encroachingonpierheadorbulkheadlines,withconsiderationgivento
thedepthcontourbelowwhichthedrivingofpilesisimpractical.A
Singlelengthberthdocklengthshouldequaltheoveralllengthofthe
largestvesseltobeaccommodated,plusanallowanceof75feetateach
endofthevessel.Forpreliminarydesign,thefollowingapproximatepier
lengthsmaybeused:

Containerships1,000Docklengthshouldequalthetotaloveralllength
ofthelargestvesselssimultaneouslyaccommodated,plusallowancesof
75feetbetweentheinshoreendofinboardvesselsandthebulkheadand
75feetbetweentheoutboardendofoutboardvesselsandtheendofthe
pier.Allowabout50feetbetweenvessels.
Therearenodenitewidthrequirements,butsucientareashouldbe
providedforstorageandfortruckandrailaccess.Anapronshouldbe
providedalongtheoutboardface.Forgeneralcargowharves,the
requiredwidthforaprons,shed,anduplandfacilitiesshouldbeabout
300feet.Thewidthmaybeincreasedforcontainerwharves.
Cleardistancesbetweenpierswillbeadequateforthesafeberthingof
therequiredmaximumsizevessels,plusclearancesforthesafeworking
oftugsandbarges,lighters,andcranesoperatingbetweenvessels.
