2026: Engineering Design II

Design Project (50%)

Select one of the following tasks for your design project.
a. Many retail stores sell products in vacuum sealed packaging. Although this type of
packaging is strong, easy to set in a display, discourages theft, and allows the consumer
to easily view the product, there are a few problems. Many times it is very difficult to
open these packages, and often the methods used can be dangerous. The packaging itself
is very sharp and may cause injury to the consumer. It is also poses a threat to the
environment as it is simply tossed in the trash and ends up in landfills. Use the design
process to:
i. design and model a pocket sized tool that anyone ages 7 to 100 could use to open
vacuum sealed packaging. Since you are accommodating a wide age range, you
are not allowed to design anything sharp, anything with fire, anything that uses
heat, or anything that can cause potential harm/injury to the user. The tool should
be estimated to cost less than RM100 or USD25, OR
ii. redesign the packaging to make it easier to open and more environmentally
pleasing without losing the positive attributes the retailer enjoys as mentioned
above. This would require you to redesign the entire packaging system, device or
machine. Your solution should be estimated to cost less than RM20,000 or
USD4,900.
b. The state of Selangor has become overpopulated with stray cats. The animals are
becoming a nuisance to the people in the state and the population must be decreased.
Since you are the President of the local animal rights group, you must find a humane way
to capture and relocate the animals. The city engineer has asked your team to design a
trap that will capture as many cats as possible without causing physical harm. The traps
must not be man or electric powered, but can and should be fully mechanical. Your trap
can adopt the utilisation of a mechanical wind-up toy, but you are not restricted to use
only this method. Your solution should be estimated to cost less than RM100 or USD25.
No physical prototype is required for the project, but you are expected to create a 3D model
using CAD software along with detailed drawings, prepare for oral presentations and a report.
Your design MUST involve complex engineering analysis that befits LO5 (Learning Outcome
No. 5), which is to design solution for engineering system, component, or processes, with
proper engineering analysis (cognitive: creating level 6). Hence, by no means are you
allowed to base the given task on simplistic designs with little engineering analysis involved.
Although there may be existing solutions available in the market, you are not allowed to follow
them 100%. You are to conduct a benchmarking exercise, compare the existing solutions and

adopt traits or features to create a new and innovative solution. If existing parts or machines are
used to support your overall design, you are supposed to design them and do the necessary
calculations for them, and not just declare that you buy them and plug and play them into your
design.
The ideas of your design need not be solely based on the syllabus of Engineering Design II
(Springs, Drive Transmissions, Gears etc). The ideas of your design can also incorporate
complex engineering analysis from different areas in mechanical engineering (Applied Statics,
Applied Dynamics, Engineering Graphics, Strength of Materials, Engineering Design I, etc).
This project is a team project and should include no more and no less than 5 students per team.
The teams will be divided within your respective tutorial groups. As such, nobody is allowed to
switch tutorial groups. If you are not able to make it for your tutorial/studio sessions, please
make sure you have approval from FET office to be absent during your tutorial session and do
not switch to another forthcoming tutorial group after your session. Any team who has more or
less than 5 members will be penalised.
For this project, each team is required to present for 10 minutes for the following occasions:
1. Progress Report Presentation 1 (2.5%) - Chaired by Dr. Ng Poh Kiat
2. Progress Report Presentation 2 (2.5%) - Chaired by Mr. Ganesh
3. Final Report Presentation (5%) - Chaired by both Dr. Ng and Mr. Ganesh
Your presentation will be graded based on a rubrics assessment and it will be worth 10% in total.
At the end of this course, you are required to submit a report which will be worth 40% in total.
The report should be more than 100 pages long (Font type: Times New Roman, Font size: 12,
Line spacing: 1.5 pt, Spacing before/after line: None, Report binding style: Stapled). Please
use the DESIGN PROJECT COVER template provided to your team. All in all, the total
marks for this whole project will be 50% (10% project presentation and 40% project report).
Your project should include the following chapters:
1. Chapter 1: Introduction (7%)
a. Problem definition
b. Root cause analysis
c. Engineering contradictions
d. Benchmarking and conceptualisation
e. Final concept
2. Chapter 2: Complex Engineering Elements (10%)
a. Complex Engineering Analyses (Fundamentals)
NPK/GK

b. Complex Engineering Analyses (Engineering Design)

c. Other Complex Engineering Analyses (Specialist Knowledge AND/OR
Engineering Practice/Technology AND/OR Research Literature)
3. Chapter 3: Final Design (7%)
a. Final Design (Material Selection and Size Approximations)
b. Final Design (3D Model and Detailed Design)
4. Chapter 4: Conclusion (16%)
a. Sustainability of Solution
b. Cost-Effectiveness of Solution
c. Societal Impact of Solution
d. Environmental Impact of Solution
The studio sessions (as specified in the lecture plan) are to help you with the progress of this
project. Please present your progresses during these sessions and ask SPECIFIC, LOGICAL and
REASONABLE questions that you are sure you need help on during the studio session.
Do not ask us to verify if your design or your method is correct or not! Please do not ask
questions such as "how do I do this project/chapter?", "is it correct if I design it this way", "what
information do I need to get good marks?", "where can I get the formula for this relation?",
"what does this word mean?" or "how do I calculate this?" These are questions you should ask
yourselves and discuss with your team members or use GOOGLE. It is better to do some
background work on the topic first, come up with a draft and then show it to the lecturer.
Before asking a question by e-mail, social media, in class or during consultation, it is suggested
that you do the following:

Try to find an answer by searching the archives of the university's library.

Try to find an answer by searching the Web.
Try to find an answer by reading a handbook, manual, research book or research article.
Try to find an answer by inspection, observation, survey or experimentation.
Try to find an answer by discussing with your team members.

Please be informed that the examiners (Dr. Ng and Mr. Ganesh) have the right to deduct
any amount of marks from your report if it does not adhere to all of the above instructions.
The deadline to submit your design report (according to the lecture plan) is by Week 14 during
your team's respective presentation time. Any team that submits their report after their
presentation will be penalised with the deduction of a substantial amount of marks.
