Project Description:

Don Salvador Benedicto Underground Road Tunnel

The underground tunnel project is proposed to connect areas within the
mountainous location of the Municipality of Don Salvador Benedicto. It aims at
providing a fast and convenient transport service linking the areas that are
hindered by steep and dangerous slopes.

The underground tunnel is approximately 200 meters long, in a

dedicated underground roadway made of composite materials of wood and
steel.The road tunnel should be designed in accordance with the respective
manual for geometric design, e.g. the AASHTO Geometric Code. The width and
size of the road should be designed to cater for all kinds of vehicles in the
geometric code, according to the class of highway it represents. This includes
all private vehicles excluding trucks, buses and the likes. The tunnel will house
a proposed two lane concrete roadway complete with drainage, electrical and
other necessary facilities. The underground tunnel is approximately 12 metres
in width having vertical clearance of 4 metres.

The underground tunnel is composed mainly of wood interconnected

with steel parts that are bolted and/or riveted. The underground road tunnel
will carry the load of earth pressure along with other surcharges. Wooden
members to be used are composed of 80% stress grade Apitong and Guijo. The
underground tunnel is protected by geotextile from accumulating large amount
of moisture from the earths surface. Wooden members are pretreated against
bacteria, fungus, insects and any other attacks that will deteriorate its strength
and weaken the structure.

The proposed project will focus mainly on the design load rather than the
aesthetic of the structure. Lighting, aeration and ventilation designs will be
excluded from the scope of the project. Other additions which do not contribute
mainly to the whole structure will not be considered.
