The Masters Message - A Year in Review

Its hard to believe that a whole year has gone by since you bestowed upon me the highest honor
in masonry, that of being Worshipful Master! It is an honor that I will cherish the rest of my life. To
be a part of an unbroken line of Masters for 166 years, in which time this lodge has seen many
things happen; a civil war, two world wars, man reaching the moon, both the industrial and now
technological revolutions. What has always been and will continue to be, is the constant growth,
support and fellowship amongst brothers at this lodge.
This year has been a busy one, beginning with several degree conferrals, followed by the rehab of
the lodge building which included repairs due to the water damage, along with upgrades such as
redoing the bathrooms, painting, ceilings, lighting, carpets and new HVAC systems. The work all
you brothers did was amazing and has created a warm and updated look for our lodge. It is now a
place brothers will want come spend time in as well as being more energy efficient, which will
save on utilities going forward. I would like to especially thank Bros. Van, Richard P., Brian W., Bob
L. and Alex G. who spent numerous hours at the lodge to make the completion of this work
possible.
Your officers have spent time traveling to other lodges in order to build unity with our local
brothers, we even performed a joint degree with another lodge. We held a movie night and a few
brothers nights out. We also followed through in completing our duties to provide written
structure to our committees and written guidance for the lodge. Our lodge was honored to be
selected to host a Grand Masters town hall meeting and selected to be a highlighted lodge in the
Northeastern Masonic Area Newsletter. We have worked hard to continue to provide quality
masonic education. Through the work of all, we received the Meritorious Award for the Grand
Masters Award of Excellence at Grand lodge this year.
I want to congratulate RWB Robert Johnson for being installed as our DDGM. It is a result of your
hard work and dedication here at the lodge as well as in the district. Your lodge is proud!
I want to thank all the past masters for their support and guidance throughout the year, especially
Tom, Carl, Brian and Bud. I would be remiss, if I did not thank all the line officers for all the
support, time, effort and dedication they put in to make this masonic year a success. I know going
forward they will do a great job in taking this lodge to the next level.
I know by the cement of brotherly love and the fellowship of brothers, each helping the other to
become a better man along with the understanding that each year is an outgrowth of the last and
the foundation of the next. Just as the sun rises in east I truly believe our lodge has a bright future
ahead.
Thank You All!
Erik Solomon, Master

Did You Know

FREEMASONRY IN THE WHITE HOUSE
James Hoban was the architect who designed and supervised the
construction of the White House. When the British destroyed this building
during the War of 1812, he designed the one replacing it. James Hoban
was a Mason. He was probably present when the cornerstone was laid by
Maryland Lodge No. 9 of Georgetown on October 13, 1792, with Masonic
ceremony. He was also a devout Roman Catholic.
During President Truman's term of office it was necessary to rebuild the
White House. In 1952, while the work was in progress, Brother Truman
discovered that some of the original stones contained traditional "Mason's
marks". He directed that these stones be preserved and delegated the duty
to Major General Harry H. Vaughan, Brother Renah F. Camalier, and the Grand Lodge of the District of
Columbia. These stones were distributed to the Grand Lodges of the United States and to certain territories
and foreign governments. On February 22, 1966, the last stone was presented to the George Washington
National Masonic Memorial Association for display in the Temple on Shooter's Hill.

Dont Forget We Need Petitions

by Midnight Freemason Contributor
Bro. Steven L. Harrison, PM
Last week at the close of one of the Masonic bodies where I am a member a Brother stood up and gave us that ubiquitous
reminder, "Don't forget... we need petitions."
I could make this a long article by listing the reasons I joined the fraternity. Among those would not be, "I joined so I
could go out and get petitions."
Like everyone, I'm happy to see new members join any part of our Masonic family. To me, a new member means a new
friend, a new opportunity to share all the aspects of Freemasonry, new support for our programs and services.
Unfortunately, when I hear, "Go out and get more petitions," it translates in my mind to "Get more dues, more donations,
more money and more dishwashers for the kitchen crew if they breathe, drag 'em in and sign 'em up."
A couple of days after that meeting I sat down to read one of my Dad's old Masonic magazines. It was from back in the
"heyday" of Masonry. Back then, the fraternity was thriving. They had over twice the membership we have today; and
according to the magazine, do you know what they needed?
More petitions.
Have I mentioned that's not why I joined the fraternity?
Seriously, it's not what I want to do as a part of Masonry. Even though it's legal to "ask" in my jurisdiction, I'm still more
of a "2B1ASK1" kinda-guy.
I'm also not excited about advertising the fraternity or its related bodies. To me, the best way to get members is to
demonstrate the worth of the Craft by our actions. We have to be active and visible in the community and attract existing
members to other bodies by showing them that the meetings are interesting, exciting, educational and more than a droning
of the minutes and routine business transactions.
It seems this is a popular point of view within the membership. I know because many times we discuss it .while the
Secretary drones on reading the minutes.
