Standard VI
Principle 1. - Acceptable
The librarian works collaboratively with other information professionals in
support of the library program, student achievement, and the profession, and
understands the role of all types of libraries in an integrated learning environment.
I rated this principle as Acceptable due to the fact that the librarian at my school does not work with
high school students so sub-heading D. did not apply to the library I am evaluating. Therefore, 3 out of
the 5 remaining sub-headings received acceptable ratings which resulted in an overall higher rating.
A. Acceptable: Makes campus library collection available through an online union
catalog, and remotely through online databases. The librarian maintains online library
access through our school website and which can be accessed through any internet
connection.
B. Acceptable: Develops a web site in collaboration with campus staff and provides links
to public and academic library online catalogs, and national and state online sites that
support TEKS student expectations. The librarian maintains the school library website
and includes direct links to various helpful library and literacy related sites. She often
requested input from teachers and staff on any improvements or additions they think should
be implemented on the website.
C. Acceptable: Collaborates with campus administrators and professional staff to provide
continuing professional education opportunities upon request. If requested, the librarian
will provide necessary training to teachers in regards to technology related lessons that can
be used in the classroom.
D. Below Standard: Does not collaborate with librarians in institutions of higher learning
to provide high school students and staff with access to collections and services. This
criterion does not apply to the library I am evaluating as it is at a middle school and not a
high school.
E. Below Standard: Does not collaborate to provide educational outreach through museums,
science centers, and other institutions that provide student-learning opportunities.
Principle 3. - Acceptable
The librarian applies and implements the principles and concepts of collection
development: evaluation, selection, acquisition, and organization of
information, and employs standard bibliographic and retrieval techniques.
The librarian utilizes a few professional selection tools as well as informal selection tools to
develop the collection. This principle is rated as overall Acceptable.
A. Acceptable: Uses at least 1 professional selection tools and has a board-approved selection
policy.
B. Below Standard: Has no collection development plan. Evaluates and maintains a collection
with an average age of more than 14 years (excluding folklore, poetry, literature, and
history.) Time sensitive material has an average age of more than 10 years (science,
technology, travel and geography.) The librarian does not have a formal collection
development plan though she does pay attention to the overall trends in the industry and is
constantly aiming to include relevant, up-to-date texts in the collection.
C. Acceptable: Campus or district employs established cataloging standards used in statewide
union catalog, if a statewide union catalog exists. At least 70% of bibliographic records
are in compliance with MARC 21 (or latest version) standards. The librarian does not
evaluate the bibliographic records for compliance because the district does this through the
system that is used and through the Library Services department.
D. Acceptable: Campus or district utilizes at least 1 cataloging software tool, such as E-Z Cat,
Bibliofile, MARCMagician, and Z39.50 databases.
Principle 5. - Acceptable
The librarian communicates effectively with students and staff to determine
information needs and applies knowledge of literature to guide development
of independent readers.
The librarian consistently interacts and collaborates with teachers, administration, and students
by applying her knowledge of the texts available and aims to help students become improved
readers on a daily basis.
A. Acceptable: Collaboratively identifies information needs related to educational
priorities in district and state curriculum by informally communicating with teachers.
The librarian understands the curriculum needs of the grade levels on campus and helps
teachers and students find information necessary for each class by talking to teachers in the
library, hallways, and classrooms.
B. Acceptable: Fulfills at least 75% of student and staff curriculum requests. The librarian
is always fulfilling requests from students and teachers and often neglects other tasks to
help work on immediate needs.
C. Below Standard: Does not provide students and staff with a research process. There is
no formal research process followed by the librarians in the district as applied to the middle
schools and high schools. Most research formats are brought in by the English teachers
themselves. However, the elementary schools follow SOLE.
D. Acceptable: Assists students to develop search strategies for locating information and
resources. Though no formal research process is explicitly taught, the librarian does help
individual students search for information when necessary.
E. Acceptable: Relates reading to students interest and enjoyment and introduces
students to literary forms such as stories, poems, and information books individually
and through reading motivation programs and large and small group instruction. This
is actually NOT something that the librarian does as she does not teach classes or give
instruction, however, on an individual basis, she will provide this information. The Below
Standard criterion was not something that could be applied to the librarian so I chose the
Acceptable level.
F. Acceptable: Instructs students and staff in the use of the campus and district collection
and requests materials through interlibrary loan from state and local resources
Principle 6. - Acceptable
The librarian demonstrates ethical behavior in all professional contexts and
promotes the principles of intellectual freedom, information access, privacy, and
proprietary rights.
Overall, the librarian follows all policies in regards to the legal and ethical aspects of copyrighted text
and intellectual freedom.
A. Acceptable: Implements district Acceptable Use, Copyright, Intellectual Freedom,
Privacy, Patron Rights, and Plagiarism policies if adopted by district. Models principles
pertaining to these policies and First Amendment rights in all professional contexts.
B. Recognized: Maintains the principles of intellectual freedom included in the ALAs
Library Bill of Rights and other national, state, and local library policies.
C. Acceptable: Maintains confidentiality of library patron records as required by the school
district, the State of Texas.
Principle 7. - Acceptable
The librarian engages in continuous self-evaluation and self-directed
learning for professional growth by participating and contributing to
professional associations and publications.
The librarian is always working to improve her outlook and knowledge on the library industry
so she can bring it to the library.
A. Acceptable: Uses library standards to assess performance and program in order to
establish goals for improvement. Reviews and revises library program goals once per
year. At the beginning of the year, the librarian sets goals and aims for a few areas of
improvement for the year.
B. Acceptable: Occasionally participates in local, state, or national association
committees. Every week, the librarian participates in a book study that is related to literacy
improvement and library improvement.
C. Recognized: Subscribes to and reads at least 2 library-related professional journals to
keep informed in library trends and best practices. The librarian is constantly using
several professional journals for the selection of materials, new trends, and ideas to use in
the library so as to aid students and staff in the best practices needed for literacy
improvement.
D. Below Standard: Does not take part in any e-mail discussion list.
E. Acceptable: Attends professional association conferences and shares information gained
at campus level. After her weekly meetings, the librarian brings the knowledge that she has
learned and discusses it with the administrators and other staff that is involved in the running of
the library.
