Mid-term exam
1) A vertical cylinder fitted with a piston contains 5 kg of water at 200C, shown
in the following figure. Heat is transferred to the system, causing the piston to
move at constant pressure until it reaches a set of stops at which point the
volume has doubled. Additional heat is transferred until the temperature inside
reaches 400C, at which point the pressure inside the cylinder is 2 MPa.
a. What is the pressure and the quality of the water at the initial state?
b. Calculate the work done and the heat transfer for the overall process.
(50 % of the total mark)

H2O

2) The dry- and the wet-bulb temperatures of atmospheric air at 1 atm pressure
were measured and found to be 30 and 18C, respectively. What is the dew
point temperature (DPT)? If the air is heated until its temperature becomes
37C, Determine the quantity of heat supply to the air, if the volume flow rate
is 10 m3/min. (25% of the total mark)
3) An inventor claims that his engine has the following specifications:
Temperature limits = 750 C and 30 C
Power developed = 75 kW
Fuel burned per hour = 3.9 kg
Heating value of fuel = 74500 kJ/kg
State if his claims are valid or not.
(25% of the total mark)
