Praxis Inquiry

Learning

Date: 12.4.16

Practice Described:
The practitioner describes
the actors and their social
situation in sufficient detail
to enable a reader to
appreciate
action.
Description will be in many
forms:
in
conversation,
case writing, photographs,
video, work samples and
portfolio
records
of
practice.

Practice Explained:
The
practitioner,
in
describing practice, has
adopted
an
explicit
discourse or discourses for
interpreting action. The
sources
of
possible
explanations
include
personal
reflection
colleagues insights and
importantly the published
research literature.

Practice Theorised:
Practitioners construct their
personal theory of the
practice.

Topic: Flipped

The flipped classroom is a reversal of traditional

teaching where students gain first exposure to new
material outside of class, usually via reading or
lecture videos, and then through strategies such as
problem-solving, discussion or debates. Within this
class the students listened to the audio firstly then
went onto their homework questions. The audio was
hard
to
follow,
alongside
with
complicated
explanations and was not clear to understand.

The Flipped classroom was popularised by teachers

Bergmann and Samms. Where they adopted a
strategy to reverse the timing of homework and
lectures. Video lectures were provided for students
before class and then exercises (homework) was done
in class under teacher supervision.
Within this classroom setting the teacher felt it would
be good for students to go over the audio again, in
case any of those students didnt listen to it.

There is no set formula for flipped classroom. Each

implementation will differ because of wide variables
such as class, size, discipline, teaching style,
technology and resources. A common theme is that
there is a greater focus on students concept
exploration, meaning making and demonstration with
more
opportunities
for
discussion,
formative
assessment and feedback. In this case I would of
made sure the audio and visuals worked well together
and were clear coherent and easy to follow for the
students. I also would have just worked on the
homework questions in class, as all students should
have listened to the audio at night.

Practice Changed:
Theorised practice presents
practitioners
with
opportunities to propose
and trial new practices.

The audio and recording needs to be clear and easy

to follow for students. If you are going to use flipped
learning as a tool, I feel it would work more effective
if the correct process was completely followed
through:
