Problem Set No. 1

Topic : Standard Vapor Compression Cycle
Due Date: 19 October 2016
1. A refrigeration system using R 134a is to have a refrigerating capacity of 65 kW. The cycle
is a standard vapor compression cycle in which the evaporating temperature is -5.4 oC and
the condensing temperature is 40oC. If there was a subcooling of refrigerant by 4 oC and
superheating by 5.4oC, determine (a) mass flow rate of the refrigerant measured in kg per
second at the inlet of the compressor; (b) the heat transfer rate at the compressor in kW?;
and (c) the COP of the refrigeration system?
2. The condensing and evaporating temperatures of a standard vapor compression cycle using
R134a are 5oC and 35oC, respectively. The cooling capacity is 8 kW. (a) Calculate the
refrigerant flow rate, (b) the rates of heat transfer to each of the components on a SVCC,
and (c) the COP of the cycle.
3.

R 134a is the working fluid in an ideal compression cycle. The refrigerant leaves the
evaporator at -20oC and has a condenser pressure of 0.9 MPa. The mass flow rate is 3
kg/min. Find the COP of the Carnot Cycle and the refrigeration effect in tons of
refrigeration.
