TOMS RIVER - A man placed a bogus 911 call and

used a television remote to mimic a deadly weapon in a
ploy that ended with a hail of police bullets and a ride to
a hospital, authorities said.
The Ocean County Prosecutors Office released
sparse details Monday on an officer-involved shooting
that closed down part of the Silverton neighborhood
Sunday evening, withholding the names of the two officers who fired a total of nine rounds and the man whom
authorities believe engineered the confrontation.
Township police first got a 911 call reporting a suspicious man with a gun near Sand Creek Lane around 6:44
p.m. Sunday, according to a statement from Capt. Jack
Sramaty, who heads the Ocean County Prosecutors Offices Special Operations Group. A second call reported
three suspicious men, but only one with a gun.
When officers arrived at Sand Creek Lane and Christian Court, they found a white man walking near the intersection, Sramaty said, and Preliminary investigation revealed that upon encountering the officers, the
subject had his right hand hidden behind his back and
began walking towards the officers.
The officers told him several times to show his hands
or put them in the air, Sramaty said, but he ignored
them.
The subject quickly removed his right hand from
behind his back and pointed a black object at the officers. The two initial responding officers fired a total of
nine rounds, striking the subject twice, Sramaty said.
The officers then rendered first aid and sent him to a
hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition, Sramaty said. He is expected to survive.
The prosecutors office has been investigating the
shooting with the help of the Ocean County Sheriffs Office. So far, the investigation indicates that the man had
been staying at a motel in the township, took a remote

Can kids watch presidential debate?

Bill Baroni arrives at Martin Luther King Jr.

Federal Courthouse for a hearing in Newark.
Baroni is being tried on charges of politically
motivated lane closures of the George
Washington Bridge in 2013.

MIKE DAVIS @BYMIKEDAVIS

Tens of millions of Americans will tune into the third

and final presidential debate Wednesday night and
wonder how low will it go. Parents of young children
will have an added concern: Can we let the kids watch?
The worry would not be misplaced, following a week
of discussion, claims and accusations about sexual harassment, unwanted sexual advances, even sexual battery atypical presidential debate subjects sparked
by Republican Donald Trumps own words, as captured
in a recording from 11 years ago.
Theres also the serial name-calling, interruptions,
baiting, general recess-behavior, exaggerated facial
expressions conduct parents typically discourage in
their offspring. Who expects to see that from their next
president?
This is not how candidates are supposed to act,

A former ally of Gov. Chris Christie took the stand in

his own defense Monday at the trial of two former
Christie associates accused of the politically motivated
closure of access lanes to the George Washington
Bridge.
Wearing a dark suit and dark green tie, Bill Baroni,
44, told jurors in federal court in Newark that he had
been duped by David Wildstein, his subordinate at the
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
In earlier testimony, Wildstein told jurors that he,
along with Baroni and the governors former deputy
chief of staff, Bridget Anne Kelly, had conspired to
close the lanes in September 2013.
