Problem No. 1 F&R Problem 4.39

Problem No. 2 - A well known reaction to generate hydrogen (currently in much demand for your
fuel cell operated Porsche) from steam is the so called water gas shift reaction: CO + H2O
CO2 + H2. If the gaseous feed to the reactor consists of 30 moles of CO per hour, 12 moles of
CO2 per hour, and 35 moles of steam per hour at 800 C, and 18 moles of H2 are produced per
hour, calculate:
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
f.
g.

The limiting reactant

The excess reactant
The fraction conversion of steam to H2
The degree of completion of the reaction
The kg of H2 yielded per kg of steam fed
The moles of CO2 produced by the reaction per mole of CO fed
The extent of reaction

Calculate the analysis (wet basis) of the flue gases formed by burning the fuel with 30 percent
(molar) excess air. Assume all the combustible components are burned to CO2 and H2O

Problem No. 8 Exam No. 2 Fall 2013

In the process of manufacturing nitric acid (HNO3) sodium nitrate (NaNO3) is reacted with
aqueous sulfuric acid containing 95 wt % H2SO4. In order that the resulting Na2SO4 niter cake
may be fluid, it is desired to use sufficient sulfuric acid so that there will be 34 wt % H2SO4 in
the final cake as free acid. It may be assumed that the cake contains 1.5 wt % water and that the
reaction will go to completion, but that 2 wt % of the HNO3 formed will remain in the cake.
Assume the sodium nitrate used is dry and pure.
Calculate the weight and percent compositions of the niter cake formed per 100 lbs of sodium
nitrate charged.
