Question:
My question is will our project float? Thats my question because we have
to build something that will make a coke can float in water. A coke can wont float
by itself. So we must make it float that is why I want to know if our project will
float.
Hypothesis:
My hypothesis is if my project floats then the coke can will float too. The
reason I think that my project will float is because the density of wood is less than
one and the density of pool noodles is less than one as well. The coke cans
density is more than one so it evenly cancels out the density of it so it will float.
That is my hypothesis.
Experiment:
The experiment is to make a project that will make a coke can float in
water. We chose wood because we knew it would float. The next item chosen
was pool noodles because it floats on water also. Afterwards we used the base
of the wood and attached four small wooded blocks on the side of the can to hold
it steady we then added the pool noodles on each side of the wooded base to
prove the can could float on our project.
Data:
Total Mass of our object without the coke can was 1.2 grams
o We found the total mass of the object by weighing all of the parts that
were put on the project
Total Volume of our object without the coke can was 131 inches squared
o We found that the total volume by using water displacement
By doing mass over volume the density equaled 0.009 which will float on
water
Conclusion:
My hypothesis was right because our device helped a coke can float. The
reason it floated because the density of our mechanism was less than one which

allowed us to answer the question on whether or not we could get the coke can
to float.
