2nd Grade News

October 18, 2016

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

The students all had a great time last week at Hill Ridge
Farms. Thank you to all of the parents who were able to come
and help make our trip a experience! Our Celebrations
Around the World Unit will be starting at the end of this
month with Diwali and Dia De Los Muertos next week. I
typically teach about the holiday and then we do an activity,
but we would love for a parent to come in and share how
your family celebrates or you can plan a craft for us to do. If
you would be interested in coming in please let me know as
soon as possible. Alternatively, if you would prefer your child
not participate please let me know so I can make
arrangements.

We have been learning about thermal conductivity,
insulators and will begin brainstorming ways to keep ice pops
from melting over a period of time without an ice chest. Over
the next few days please have your child gather materials to
bring in to use for building next week. This project will be a
big part of their Quarter 1 final grade.

From October 17th-28th, TMSA will be collecting Box
Tops each morning by the student entrance. Each student who
submits Box Tops will receive a special treat. Students who
submit 25 or more Box Tops will also receive a raffle ticket for
a larger prize at the end of the month.

What Were Learning

This week in reading we have been talking about rising action and focusing on using text
features as a way to help up determine the main idea of non-fiction passage. We are still
working on the 4 types of sentences and have started learning about proper nouns and
contractions. In writing, we are writing rough drafts and editing narratives about a favorite
celebration. In math we will be working on comparing two and three-digit numbers and
reviewing using doubles facts as a way to solve a doubles +1 fact. In social studies we have
started learning about maps and globes. Next week we will create our very own island and
make a map and travel brochure to describe our island. In science weve been discussing what
it means to be an inventor, the design process and learning about matter and properties of
change in preparation to keep popsicles from melting over a period of time.
