Colombia,FARCRebelsSignCeasefireAgreement
Small issues need to be worked out before the Colombian people vote on the
peace deal in a special referendum.
e main parts of the deal include a ceasere, disarmament of rebel forces
and land reforms. e agreement will give former rebels some political
power. e former FARC ghters can avoid prison time in exchange for
community service and travel restrictions.
e two sides had expected to sign the nal agreement in March. But
questions remained on exactly how the conditions in the peace deal would be
enacted. Another question was who would control a special war crimes court.
e most important questions are how the deal will be put into place legally.
Some Colombia watchers wonder what will happen if the deal falls apart if a
more conservative government takes power aer Santos leaves oce in 2018.
e Marxist FARC rebels launched their campaign against the government as
a poor peoples rebellion in 1964. ey grew into a dangerous ghting force.
FARC turned to drug tracking and kidnapping to nance its guerilla war.
But the rebels failed to oust the Colombian government.
