PHY 101: Mechanics

Semester: Fall 2016

Tutorial 1: Calculus
Concept I: Derivative Of A Function
1. Calculate derivative of f (x) = x2 + 9x + 1 by definition of derivative and check your
answer with the help of power rule of derivative.

Concept II: How to Analyze Position, Velocity, and Acceleration with Dierentiation
2. An objects position is described by the following polynomial for 0 to 10 s.
x(t) = t3 15t2 + 54t.
Where x is in meters, t is in seconds, and positive is forward. Determine
(a) the objects velocity as a function of time,
(b) the objects acceleration as a function of time,
(c) the objects maximum velocity,
(d) the objects minimum velocity,
(e) the time when the object was moving backward,
(f) the times when the object returned to its starting position,
(g) the objects average velocity,
(h) the objects average speed.
3. The acceleration of a body in 1-D motion is given by a = 4 t2 for 0 t 4, where
a is in m/s2 and t is in seconds. If at t = 3 s, v = 2 m/s, and x = 9 m.
(a) derive the expression for the velocity of the body as a function of time.
(b) derive the expression for the position of the body as a function of time.
(c) What is the displacement of the object between times t = 3 s and t = 4 s?
