Reflection on God is BenevolentNo Matter What

I took a very fascinating class about God. God and Human Suffering. In this
class we studied why a human suffers if a benevolent God exists who is supposed to
care and love us. The professor in this class, to bring us closer to debating the topic
had us read The Brothers Karamazov. Though the author is Russian, we were able to
get a clear meaning from the text.
The message of the essay is to answer the question about Gods benevolence
in relation to human suffering. The philosophical question was the topic of the paper
and I feel I answered that, in the best way a musing question about God can be
answered. The two brothers from the story were having a conversation about God.
God and his benevolence. The brothers, Alyosha and Ivan have conflicting opinions
on the subject, though they never get angry or upset at the other.
Ivan believes that mankind has manufactured the idea of evil and that evil
rest in man. I do wish there was more reference to the material in the original essay.
There was a mention of another book that I used as secondary material to help
further my argument. In the book, Why do Good Things Happen to Bad People,
Gods love is hinged on human intellect. Can we comprehend Gods love? Gods
love for us is so beyond us because we cant comprehend God, nor his wisdom. It is
divine. He has a way of loving us that we cant even wrap our minds around it.
Which would in turn make suffering and human loss but a small part of Gods day
This quote from the original essay helps to further Ivan Karamazov point. Evil takes
the shape of human malevolence, just as humans are made in Gods image.
The main communicated point of the essay is that, we imagine God as
benevolent because we want him to be, not necessarily because he is. The class
was a philosophy course and being able to muse on such a topic was quite fun. The
text helped shape my opinion on the subject, and I did agree with one of the
brothers at times.
