This document outlines approved methods for measuring whether water quality criteria have been exceeded or decreased according to the Environment Protection (Water Quality) Policy 2003. Approved methods include standard published methods from recognized sources and methods accredited by the Australian National Association of Testing Authorities. The analytical method used must have a limit of reporting lower than the relevant water quality criterion and be suitable for the protected environmental values of the water body in question.

Clause 13 Environment Protection (Water Quality) Policy 2003 Approved Method for Measuring whether Water Quality Criteria
have been Exceeded or Decreased
For the purposes of clause 13(2) of the Environment Protection (Water Quality) Policy 2003, (the Policy) any of the following analytical methods is a method approved by the Authority:
A Standard Published Method published:
a) in the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater www.standardmethods.org/; b) by ASTM International www.astm.org/; or c) by the US National Environmental Methods Index www.nemi.gov/
A method that has been accredited by the Australian National
Association of Testing Authorities www.nata.asn.au/
or
subject to the following requirements, namely,
a) If the analyte under consideration is subject to a comparison with a pollutant listed in Schedule 2 of the Policy (Water Quality Criteria) the limit of reporting of the analytical method must be less than the criterion for that pollutant. b) The water quality criterion that is used for comparison must be selected with reference to the Environmental Values listed in Table 1or Table 2 in Schedule 1 of the Policy (Protected Environmental Values). c) Where multiple protected environmental values apply to the water body in question (with corresponding water quality criteria) the analytical method limit of reporting must be less than the lowest of those criteria.
