ASKLEPIOS KLINIKEN
Asklepios is the only large German hospital group that also has an international
presence. The family company is owned by a sole shareholder who has, since the
company was founded more than 25 years ago, consistently reinvested the profits in the
hospitals rather than taking any dividend payouts. The shareholder has also set up each
facility for non-profit involvement in prevention work, especially in schools but also for
adults. The group is responsible for more than 100 facilities and roughly 44,000 staff in
Germany alone. Almost 2 million patients trust the clinic group with their health each
year. The chain of clinics has entered into the voluntary commitment to cap the number
of agency workers within the group at three percent. In Germany, every 40th baby is
born in one of the Asklepios hospitals between Sylt and Lindau on Lake Constance.
Asklepios runs the Deutsche Kinderherzzentrum in St. Augustin, and is also responsible
for almost one third of all psychiatric units in former East Germany and several
facilities in forensic psychiatry.
Asklepios Kliniken Hamburg GmbH is Europe's largest cluster of clinics at one
location, covering almost every medical discipline, ranging from ophthalmology to
dentistry. In Hamburg alone, Asklepios employs a workforce of almost 13,000 on all
levels of qualification (including roughly 1,800 doctors); providing 1,400 trainee
positions, it is the largest training centre and, measured in terms of workforce, the
largest private-sector employer in the city. In the Hanseatic City, Asklepios Kliniken
treat every second hospital patient, hence accounting for 50 percent more inpatients than
the Berliner Charit, Germany and Europe's largest university clinic. Two of four
newborn Hanseatic citizens enter this world in one of the in total five Asklepios
maternity wards in Hamburg. In MEDILYS GmbH, Asklepios operates one of Europe's
largest clinic laboratories. Over ten million analyses and more than 18 million findings

The vision associated with the mission, principles or values translates the
strategy followed by the hospital as an institution. It promotes good practice via an
ethical culture of quality of service, humanization and respect for the dignity of each
person. The ethical dimension of management makes it likely that all professionals in
Health Units management are guided by an ethical behavior, acting in accordance to the
mission and values, because no one can take high levels of engagement and
commitment to the organization in which it operates if a clear consistency between
declared principles and developed practices is not perceived. I also believe that the
existence of coherence between the values expressed in the mission and its translation
into the reality of the institutions are factors that should be considered for their success.
Values can also be considered the basic principles of reference that the
organization and its staff intend to respect and the principles that are the fundamental
rules, doctrines, regulations and assumptions by which managers and employees are
expected to act. Thus, the principles support the values and establish the basic
priorities and fundamental expectations.
Values can be linked to the organizational system or to the person. The
management success lies in the appropriate switching and integration between the
values oriented towards the organization and focused on the person, that is, managing
by values favors a changing climate that welcomes people and their values. In this
framework, it is intended that the principles, values or beliefs establish themselves as
decision-making guides, that they guide behavior, evidencing ethics and motivating
action, referenced by the content of the mission in order to also achieve the vision of the
future. However, according to the opinion of Zoboli and Fracolli when they state that
health care takes place in institutions that use tools and forms of management that
should focus on people, managing by values such as those associated with the vision
and mission of the institution and the instrumental values (also called operating values)
that link to the thinking and acting. They also express that managing by values
facilitates the inclusion of principles or ethical references in the culture of organizations.
