Welcome to Earthwork Series: Fill Placement Introduction.

This module is a brief


introduction to orientate you to the features of the National Highway Institutes, or
NHIs, Online Learning System and provide you with an overview of this training.
The presentation is available as an attachment from the paperclip icon in the bottom
right-hand part of the screen.

Welcome to Earthwork Series: Fill Placement Introduction. This module is a brief


introduction to orientate you to the features of the National Highway Institutes, or
NHIs, Online Learning System and provide you with an overview of this training.

right-hand part of the screen.

This training is offered by an effort of the Transportation Curriculum Coordination


Council. It contains a collection of Best Practices from various agency and FHWA
training rules, laws, policies, and procedures. Each state agency/company has their
own requirements, which you need to review and follow.

The Earthwork Series: Fill Placement Web-based training is designed to provide


learners with information about the process of fill placement, the safety procedures
necessary, and steps for addressing obstacles.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
Explain fill placement;
Recall fill placement safety procedures; and
Identify steps for addressing obstacles associated with fill placement.
This module will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

This training consists of 4 modules that contains 8 lessons:


Module 1 has Lesson 1: Engineered Fill.

Module 2 has Lesson 2: Fill Placement and Compaction.


Module 3 has three lessons. They are Lesson 3: Embankments, Lesson 4: Utility
Backfill, and Lesson 5: Culvert Bedding and Backfill.
Module 4 also has three lessons. They are Lesson 6: Wall Backfill; Lesson 7:
Keying and Benching of Embankments; and Lesson 8: Drainage.

After you launch the training, you will notice several modules displayed. Select the
Open button to begin each module. Upon completion, close the module and return
to the curriculum to continue the training. The status for the module will change to
Review.
You may review all of the modules infinitely, with the exception of the end-of-course
exam, which you may attempt only once.

This self-paced, Web-based training is designed for you to progress at your own
pace. At any time, you may close the training and come back to it. The learning
system will bookmark your place automatically.
Please note that this training has an audio component on every screen except for
the end-of-course exam.
NHI holds other Web-based and Web-conference training. Visit the NHI Web site at
http://www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov to enroll in more trainings.

Throughout this training, you may select one of the small directional arrows in the
control bar located in the corner of your screen to move to the next screen or review
a prior screen. You can also use the Back and Continue buttons on the bottom of
the screen.
Also, select the paper-clip icon in the lower section of the control bar to download a
printer-friendly version of the training slides. Only the slides for the open module are
available. If the control bar is minimized, expand it in order to view the paper clip
icon.
Select the movie camera icon on the right, below the directional arrows, to expand
or collapse this control bar. When selected, the icon opens a pane on the right side
of the screen that contains tabs to access the training outline, narration text, and a
search function.
Select the designated tab to view the training outline or narration or to search on a
topic. Before you move into more of the training, select the Help link on your left
and take a moment to review the navigation features of this training. NHI prepares
all of its asynchronous training in PowerPoint in conjunction with the Adobe
Presenter tool. Published modules are displayed through Adobe Connect on the
FHWA Online Learning System.

NHI trainings provide three hyperlinks in the upper right corner of every
screen. The links provide access to the training reference manual, a glossary
of terms, and help information. A new window opens when you select one of
the links.
Make sure your pop-up blocker is off to permit the windows to open. You can
view this information from your computer or open the file and print a copy.
We encourage you to save and print a copy of the glossary to have as an
available reference while you take the training.
When you are ready to advance to the next slide, select the Continue
button in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. If you wish to review a
previous slide, select Back.

To help you more easily navigate the training, weve provided several
standard screens to ensure you are oriented to the module. Each module
contains a Module Introduction that provides the modules objectives as well
as the estimated duration. A Module Summary concludes each module and
restates the objectives.

Knowledge checks are provided throughout the training. Respond to the knowledge
check in order to verify your understanding of the material presented in the lesson.

Each knowledge check is followed by a debrief slide. On the debrief slide, you will
be presented with the correct answer and additional information or an explanation, if
applicable.
If you are ready to start the training, the correct answer is a) Yes.
