An integral part in HVDC transmission

In addition to the primary task of adjusting
voltages between the AC/DC systems, there is
also the galvanic separation between the two
systems. The resulting extensive range in voltage
regulation leads to an improved minimum supply
of reactive power.

Global leadership
ABB is the worlds largest supplier of
converter equipment for high voltage
DC transmission, including converter
transformers. The close cooperation
between the transformer manufacturing branch of ABB and the
HVDC branch paves the way for a
unique pooling of knowledge which
has proven to be extremely beneficial
in building transformers as well as in
the design of converter stations.
The first commercial HVDC transmission was commissioned in the
early sixties followed by a large
number of ever more demanding
projects worldwide. In the meantime
there has been a six-fold increase
in transmission voltage up to the
present maximum of 600 kV DC.
Power ratings of several thousand
megawatts in one single transmission
project are on delivery today.
