A 5-level cascaded hybrid multilevel inverter for

interfacing with renewable energy resources

Abstract:
A 5-level cascaded hybrid multilevel inverter for interfacing with renewable energy
resources is developed. The objective of this research is to propose an alternative
topology of hybrid cascaded multilevel inverter applications. The modified PWM
technique is also developed to reduce switching losses. Also, the proposed topology
can reduce the number of required power switches compared to a traditional cascaded
multilevel inverter. PSIM (PowerSim) and Simulink/MATLAB are used to simulate the
circuit operation and control signal. The 3-kW prototype is developed. The results show
that this alternative topology can be applied for high power applications as a multilevel
inverter.

Abstract: There are many limitations in extracting power from renewable energy
resources. To minimize the power demand and scarcity we have to improve the
power extracting methods. Multilevel inverter is used to extract power from solar
cells. It synthesizes the desired ac output waveform from several dc sources. This
paper focuses on improving the efficiency of the multilevel inverter and quality of
output voltage waveform. Seven level reduced switches topology has been
implemented with only seven switches. Fundamental Switching scheme and
Selective Harmonics Elimination were implemented to reduce the Total Harmonics
Distortion (THD) value. Selective Harmonics Elimination Stepped Waveform
(SHESW) method is implemented to eliminate the lower order harmonics.
Fundamental switching scheme is used to control the power electronics switches in
the inverter. The proposed topology is suitable for any number of levels. The
harmonic reduction is achieved by selecting appropriate switching angles. It shows

hope to reduce initial cost and complexity hence it is apt for industrial applications.
In this paper third and fifth level harmonics have been eliminated. Simulation work
is done using the MATLAB software and experimental results have been presented
to validate the theory. Keywords: Multilevel Inverter, MATLAB, THD, Fundamental
Switching Scheme and Selective Harmonics Elimination. I

Abstract In this paper, an H-bridge inverter topology with reduced switch

count technique is introduced. This technique reduces the number of controlled
switches used in conventional multilevel inverter. To establish a single phase
system, the proposed multilevel inverter requires one H-bridge and a multi
conversion cell. A multi conversion cell consists of three equal voltage sources with
three controlled switches and three diodes. In conventional method, twelve
controlled switches are used to obtain seven levels. Due to involvement of twelve
switches the harmonics, switching losses, cost and total harmonic distortion are
increased. This proposed topology also increases the level to seven with only seven
controlled switches. It dramatically reduces the complexity of control circuit, cost,
lower order harmonics and thus effectively reduces total harmonic distortion.

Abstract Unique features of multi-level converters have recently nominated
them as significant alternatives for solid-state power converting units, even in the
low and medium power range. The fact that Multilevel converters need several DC
sources in the DC side, makes them attractive for Photovoltaic(PV) applications. This
paper presents a new control strategy to control Cascaded Multilevel converters in a
multi-string configuration for single phase grid connected systems. Eventually,
simulation results are provided to validate the control system under various
insolation conditions. I

Cascade Multilevel Inverters for Industrial Applications

Abstract Cascade Multilevel Inverters are very popular and have many

applications in electric utility and for industrial drives. When these inverters are
used for industrial drive directly, the THD contents in output voltage of inverters is
very significant index as the performance of drive depends very much on the quality
of voltage applied to drive. In this article, the THD contents of 7, 11 and 15 level
cascade multilevel inverters have been analysed. The THD depends on the
switching angles for different units of multilevel inverters, therefore, the switching
angles are calculated first by using N-R method where certain number of harmonic

components has been eliminated. Using calculated switching angles, THD analysis
is carried out analytically as well as using MATLAB simulation (both results are in
close agreement). As per IEEE-519 standard, the output voltage produced should
satisfy the limit on THD. It has been found that the fifteen level CMLI satisfies this
limit while seven and eleven level CMLI violates this limit. Keywords Cascade
