How to Use This Chart

This chart describes the route to human recovery
and ultimate expansion of ones ability and power
as a spiritual being. The field of human recovery
belongs to Dianetics technology. Scientology
philosophy brings an individual to higher states of
being and ability. The chart could be conceived as a
map of the expansion of life. It shows at each level
the realization of a greater potential with, at the left
under Training, a new knowledge and skill in
handling life, in the center of the chart under
Awareness Characteristics, an expanded awareness,
and at the right under Processing, the attainment of
a higher state of beingness.
1. In your first reading of the chart you will probably
have scanned it over in a general way and become
familiar with many parts of it. Be sure, next, to read
across the top of the columns to learn what each level
describes. Youll see that there are three main areas,
Training, Awareness Characteristics and Processing,
and all three progress upwards in increasing levels on

the chart. Just as each level up to Clear requires an

auditor with an added field of knowledge and skill, at
each level we find also a preclear ready to be run on
the level, having attained all the grades below.
2. Now look at the various introductory level
services at the bottom of the chart under Dianetics
and Scientology Introductory Services. Note that
these introductory level services and activities are not
mandatory, but are there to help one begin and become
familiar with the fundamentals. One may take any
of these routes he chooses the Registrar at your
nearest Church of Scientology can assist you in selecting
the one best suited to your needs and interests.
3. Read across each complete level of the chart, only
moving up a level when you have satisfied your own
understanding of each level as described. You will
thereby gain a thorough grasp of the direction and
magnitude of Dianetics technology and Scientology
philosophy. At the band of Clear the column headings
are doubled for each level so the headings
correspond to the upper and lower boxes in
each row.

4. The optimum route up this chart is to train as an

auditor and co-audit with another up the processing
side of the chart. Through training you gain a
complete understanding of the mind and life and thus
your gains from auditing are greater. Following
completion of the Purification Rundown, co-auditing
can be done up through NED Case Completion or the
state of Clear in all Academies of Scientology
organizations.
5. On the far left and far right of the chart, you will
find described various services (training services on
the left-hand side, processing on the right) that can
be done at several different points on ones way up

6. Read the books of Dianetics technology and
Scientology philosophy, available from every Church
of Scientology or your local bookstores for continued
expansion of your knowledge and use of the subjects.
7. In your study of this chart (and in any study) be
sure you do not go past words you do not
understand. Use a good dictionary. There is also a

Scientology Dictionary available from your Church of

Scientology.
With this chart in front of you, you have already
made the most important step of all you have
contacted truth and the route to freedom. It is hard
for man in his present condition to grasp even that
higher states of being exist. He had no literature
about them, really, or any vocabulary for them.
In all of philosophy he had no glimmering at all
of Dianetics technology and only a distant hope for
spiritual freedom as in Scientology philosophy, but
no technology at all.
Factually youve been traveling this universe a very
long time without a map. Now youve got one.
Put this chart on your wall. When youve taken some
of the steps, mark them DONE with the date. Find out
your next step and mark it TO BE DONE and WHEN.

Definitions
AUDITOR: a person trained and qualified in
applying Dianetics and/or Scientology processes
and procedures to individuals for their betterment;
called an auditor because auditor means one who
listens.
CLEAR: the name of a state achieved through
auditing or an individual who has achieved this
state. A Clear is a being who no longer has his
own reactive mind. A Clear is an unaberrated
person and is rational in that he forms the best
possible solutions he can on the data he has
and from his viewpoint. The Clear has no
engrams which can be restimulated to throw
out the correctness of computation by entering
hidden and false data.
DIANETICS: Dianetics spiritual healing technology.
It addresses and handles the effects of the spirit
on the body and can alleviate such things as

unwanted sensations and emotions, injuries and

psychosomatic illnesses (ones that are caused or
aggravated by mental stress). Dianetics means
through the soul (from Greek dia, through and
nous, soul). It is further defined as what the
soul is doing to the body.

PRECLEAR: a person who is on the road to

becoming Clear, hence pre-Clear. A Clear is a
being who, through Scientology and Dianetics
processing, is able to form the best possible
solutions he can on the data he has and from
his viewpoint.

OT: a being who is knowing and willing cause over

life, thought, matter, energy, space and time.
For thousands of years men have sought the state
of complete spiritual freedom from the endless
cycle of birth and death and have sought personal
immortality containing full awareness, memory and
ability as a spirit independent of the flesh.
In Scientology this state has been attained. We
call this state Operating Thetan. To operate
something is to be able to handle it. Thetan is from
the Greek letter theta the traditional philosophers
symbol (from the letter in the Greek alphabet
theta ) of thought, spirit or life. Thus it means a
being who as a spirit alone can handle things.

RELEASE: the term for what occurs when a

person separates from his reactive mind or some
part of it. The degree and relative permanence of
being pulled out of the reactive mind determines
the state of Release. There are a number of states
or stages of Release and these are called Grades.
SCIENTOLOGY: Scientology philosophy. It is the
study and handling of the spirit in relationship to
itself, universes and other life. Scientology means
scio, knowing in the fullest sense of the word
and logos, study. In itself the word means
literally knowing how to know. Scientology is a
route, a way, rather than a dissertation or an
assertive body of knowledge. Through its drills

and studies one may find the truth for himself.

The technology is therefore not expounded as
something to believe, but something to do.
THETAN: the person himself not his body or his
name, the physical universe, his mind or anything
else; that which is aware of being aware; the
identity which is the individual. The term was
coined to eliminate any possible confusion with
older, invalid concepts. It comes from the Greek
letter theta () to which an n is added to make a
noun in the modern style used to create words in
engineering. It is also n, or theta to the nth
degree, meaning unlimited or vast.
TRs: training regimens or routines, often referred
to as training drills. TRs are practical drills on the
cycle of communication.
