Project information, data entry sheet and minimum length calculations for the basin.
General:
Required project information and data entry fields are highlighted. Use "TAB" key to move forward
between data entry cells. Use "SHIFT" + "TAB" to move back to previous data entry cell.
No other data entry is required on sheets 2,3,5, and 6. Data entered from sheet 1 is carried forward to these sheets.
Calculations are made to determine the minimum required length of the sediment basin, given a proposed
starting bottom width.
Sheet 1:
Computation Sheet header:
Enter data in highlighted cells:
Project:
Enter a description of project (Cooperator (s) name, etc.).
Job No.:
Enter a job number for the project.
By:
Enter name of person designing the project.
Date:
Enter the date of the design.
Checked by: Signature of person with job approval authority who has checked the design.
Date:
Date the design was checked.
Cell following "Size Sediment Basin":
Enter descriptive information (such as field number) about basin.
Given:
Enter data in highlighted cells:
Acres of irrigated cropland.
Crop rotation is required but for information only.
Soil surface texture (used in EFM chart).
Greatest 1 year sediment yield for the crop rotation (from SISL).
Typical irrigation stream is amount of water applied per set (in cfs).
Irrigation runoff (40-50%depending on slope, IWM, etc.).
Desired cleanout refers to how many years between cleanouts. As period between
cleanouts is increased, the size of the basin is increased. If more than one cleanout per year is an option,
enter as the decimal equivalent of one year.
Trap efficiency of 65% may be changed if circumstances warrant. Enter as a whole number.
Calculations:
Enter data in highlighted cells for proposed basin dimensions.
Storage depth is used in top width, cross-sectional area, velocity, minimum length
and effective storage calculations.
Excavated depth is used in calculating total amout of soil removed in digging basin
allowing for 1 ft. freeboard. Excavated depth and storage depth will be the same if using a 1 ft. berm for freeboard.
Percent of water storage to total storage is used in calculating cross-sectional area for the
water storage component of the total storage volume. Water velocity is based on this area. Can be entered as a
whole number (ie, 33) or as a whole number and decimal (33.3).
Enter side slope as whole number or decimal. Example: For side slope of 2 to 1, enter 2;
for side slope of 1/4 to 1, enter .25.
Distance for soil particle to drop 1 ft. is obtained from EFM, Appendix 10 tables based on
water velocity entering the basin, surface texture and trap efficiency. A copy is provided on the tab marked 'Figure 3'.
Answers are in red cells.
NOTE:
Any changes made in bottom width, storage depth or side slope can cause changes
in calculated cross-sectional area, velocity, and length. New data, from tables in EFM 10, Appendix 10,
will be required to be entered in "Distance for soil particle to drop 1 ft", if changes are made in any of the
proposed basin dimensions.
Sheets 2,3,5,6: All values in Sheets 2,3,5, and 6 are calculated from data in the highlighted cells from Sheet 1.
Sheet 3:
Actual sediment storage is shown based on the percentage of water storage to total storage.
Adequacy of actual storage compares actual storage to needed storage on Sheet 1.
Sheet 4:
Enter new distance for soil particle to drop 1 ft. from EFM, Appendix 10 tables based on
water velocity using minimum bottom width based on combined cross-section requirements.
Sheet 7:
Enter legal (T, R, S), North arrow, inlet and outlet elevations and TBM elevation and location.
Enter type of freeboard, ie. 1 ft. Excavated or 1 ft. dirt berm around edge of basin.
Enter an identifier (Field No., etc) in cell next to the title.
Enter your initials in"Designed".
Person with job approval authority who has checked and approved the design should enter
their initials in the "Checked", "Date", "Approved by", and "Title" spaces.
All dimensions are carried forward from FIRST sheet where a proposed bottom width was used.
Sheet 8:
When spreadsheet is first opened (no data has been entered), some cells will display #DIV/0! error.
This will be replaced by the proper value after data entry.
