1 INTRODUCTION
This manual describes IMDG Code on CD-ROM Version 7.1 (2004 Edition) including
Amendment 32-04.
IMDG Code on CD-ROM is an information retrieval system comprising:

A complete and unabridged computerised version of the text of Amendment 32 of the

IMDG Code, including the Supplement.

The Dangerous Goods List, a tabulated form of all the substances listed in the IMDG
Code.

Facilities for printing the Dangerous Goods Note, schedules for individual substances and
the ability to print any part of the IMDG Code.

All the above is available in English. French and Spanish will be available in Version 7.1.

IMDG CODE ON CD-ROM is published, marketed, sold and distributed by the:

International Maritime Organization
4 Albert Embankment, London, SE1 7SR, United Kingdom
The software to retrieve and display the information has been developed by Exis
Technologies Limited and any comments on loading, accessing and using the software can be
faxed or emailed to Exis, see details at the start of this manual.

2 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
2.1

Hardware requirements

IMDG CODE ON CD-ROM is developed to run on any IBM PC compatible computer with
a 486 or Pentium (or upwards) processor, at least 24 MB of RAM, VGA monitor, and CD
drive. When installed, the software and data will require not more than 25 MB of hard disk
space.

2.2

Software requirements

You should be running Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, 2003, ME, XP or NT.
The text is displayed using Internet Explorer version 4.0 and upwards.

3 INSTALLATION
3.1

Installing from the CD

3.1.1

Installation assumptions and definitions

The following assumptions have been made purely for the purposes of example. Please
substitute drive letters, directories and paths relevant to your configuration.
The hard drive letter of the First Installation is C
The installation folder name in C: is called IMDG32
The CD drive letter is D
First Installation

The First Installation contains the installed system, i.e. the data
files, the executable program IMDG32 and the program serial
number. The computer upon which the First Installation is
installed may either be a single stand-alone PC or any accessible
PC on a network.

Workstation Installation The Workstation Installation is installed on any PC that can

access the First Installation. This installation is simply a shortcut
to the First Installation using a mapped network drive letter and
the installation folder name.

3.1.2

Single-user installation

The installation process will start automatically when you insert the CD into drive D and will
display the following window.
Fig. 1 Automatic installation

For a single user system or the first installation on a network you must select First
installation. If your CD does not autostart, select Start, Run and type D:\install or doubleclick install.exe in the top-level directory of the CD. The Setup Wizard will now guide you
through the installation process which will ask you for the following:
Destination Location This is the directory path of folder where the main system will be
installed. The default is C:\IMDG32 but you may install the system
anywhere. One consideration is that if this is the First Installation on
a network then all network users will need to be able to access this
location.

your desk top

The final screen displays a summary of your installation settings. Click Install to complete the
installation process. Click Back to change your settings. Click Cancel to back out of the
installation.

3.1.3

Entering your program serial number

The first time you run the program it will ask you to enter your program serial
number. You will find your program serial number with the product
documentation.

Fig. 2 Entering the Program Serial Number

Enter the code and press OK. Keep this code safe in case you need to re-install the system.
You will not be asked to enter the program serial number again. If you press Cancel or you
enter an invalid serial number you will see the following message box.

3.1.4

Online Registration

Product registration entitles you to email support.

Fig. 4 Online product registration with IMO

As soon as you have entered your valid serial number you will be requested to register the
product on IMO's website. If you are not connected to the internet or do not wish to register
online, click No and continue with the program. You will be given the opportunity to register
online the next four times the program is run.
If you choose to register online you will be connected to the relevant page on IMO's website
where you enter your requested details. Having registered, you can run the program. Once
you have registered online, you will not be asked to register again. Should you fail to register
or do not have an internet connection, you can still register by post at your own convenience.

3.1.5

Networked versions

Setup the First Installation on a network

The first step is to install the First Installation on to a server, network drive or a PC that all
other users can access. This is identical to the single user installation and is described in 3.1.2
above.
To save your network users from each having to enter the program serial number you should
run the program for the first time directly from the First Installation and enter the program
serial number. This will write the encrypted serial number into the First Installation folder.
Thereafter, all network users will see the encrypted serial number in the First Installation
folder and not be asked to enter it themselves.
At the same time you could also register the program with IMO. If not, then each network
user will be asked to register as they run the program for the first time.
Setting up a network user
Map a drive letter to the network drive of the First installation. During this setup you will be
asked for the destination location of the First Installation, which is the mapped drive letter
followed by the folder name of the First Installation.
Insert the CD into the CD drive, select Workstation installation. If the workstation does not
have a CD drive, then use one that can be accessed on the network. If your CD does not
autostart, select Start, Run and type D:\install or double-click install.exe in the top-level
directory of the CD. The Setup Wizard will now guide you through the installation process
which will ask you for the following:
Destination Location The default path chosen by the installation procedure is X:\IMDG32.
Enter the mapped network drive letter and folder name of the First
Installation.
Start Menu Folder

This is the name of the location for the program shortcut when
starting the program via Start / Programs.

Additional Tasks

3.2

This tick box, which if ticked, will place the program short cut on
your desk top

Running IMDG32 directly from the CD-ROM

Instead of installing the software, this program can be run directly from the CD. Insert the CD
into drive D and select Run from CD. The first time you run the program it will ask you to:

enter the program serial number

be asked to register online

Thereafter, to run the program from CD simply insert the CD and click Run from CD.
Note. The program performance when retrieving text will largely depend on the speed of your
CD drive and its spin-up time following power saving.

3.3

Relocating the system to another directory or computer

It is possible that the system will need to be relocated to a different directory or to another
computer. The procedure for moving the system is:

If you are running a networked multi-user system, instruct all users to stop using the
system.

Re-install the system from the CD into the new location. Use The First Installation
option. This will apply to both single-user and multi-user versions.

Enter the program serial number. There is no need to re-register the system so close the
connection to the publications page on IMO's web site.

For each workstation, change the mapped drive letter in the shortcut to point to the new
location. This means changing the drive letter in the Target and the Start in pointers
in the Shortcut tab page of the shortcuts Properties window.

Install any new workstations as normal. The system should now be usable from the new
location.

4.6.4

Find a word or words in the IMDG Code

You can search the IMDG Code for one or more words or part words occurring within a
chapter, starting from the first chapter and working through to the last chapter. A word is any
number of characters delimited by a space character or any punctuation character. Each word
is searched for independently, not as a single phrase.
Select Text Search in the Find menu, enter the word or words, including the conditional
operators (OR and NOT), and click on OK.
Fig. 11 Search for a word or words in the IMDG Code

In this example, the program searches for the first chapter containing both words. When
found, the first occurrence of the first word in the text search string is highlighted. Scroll to
the end of the chapter to see the remaining occurrences.

Page 11

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Click on this button to go to the next chapter containing all words in your text search
string. The search will continue until the end of the IMDG Code is reached.
Click on this button to go back to the previously selected word.
Separating the words with a space character is the default condition and implies the AND
condition. This means that the words either side of the AND must both appear in the chapter.
Therefore, separating all words with the space character implies that all words must be
present in the chapter.
OR condition
Separating two words with OR instructs the search to find either word.
NOT condition
Separating two words with NOT instructs the search to find chapters containing the first
word but not the second word.

Explanation of Substance Details data

UN number
The UN Number is the four digit number United Nations Number assigned to a dangerous
good by the United Nations Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UN
List).
In Form View you can display any substance by entering its UN Number directly into this
field. As soon as you enter the fourth digit, the details for that substance will be displayed. If
there is no substance currently assigned to the number you have entered, then the next higher
UN Number will be displayed. If you enter a number greater than the highest UN Number (
currently UN 3468) then the first UN Number is displayed (currently UN 0004).
Substance Name
This is the Proper Shipping Name (PSN) of the substance and is shown in upper case
characters, which may have to be followed by additional descriptive text in lower case
characters. Please note that the descriptive text is not a part of the Proper Shipping Name.
Substances may have a number of variants where each variant will be assigned the same UN
Number but will be a separate record in the Substance Details database. The variation name is
displayed in green below the substance name.

Page 14

IMDG Code 2004 Edition

Version 7

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Variation Description
Where there is more than one entry for a UN number, the Variation Description identifies this
particular entry. The variation description is displayed in green and is located below the
Substance Name. Use the Next and Previous buttons to see details of other variations.
Some reasons why a substance may have variations:

Belong to more than one packing group

Different physical states, e.g. Solid or Molten

Class
Substances and articles, including mixtures and solutions, subject to the provisions of the
IMDG Code are assigned to one of the classes 1-9 according to the hazard or the most
predominant of the hazards they present. In the case of explosives the class number, i.e. 1, is
followed by the division and compatibility group.
Subsidiary Risk
Where a substance has multiple hazards, the class numbers of the others hazards are listed
here and in order of precedence of hazard. Please refer to section 2.0.3 in the Introduction to
Chapter 2 of Part 2 Classification.
Packing Group
For packing purposes, substances of all classes other than classes 1, 2, 5.2, 6.2 and 7 and the
self-reactive substances of class 4.1 are assigned to three Packing Groups in accordance with
the degree of danger presented by the substance. The Packing Groups have the following
meanings:
I

Substances presenting high danger

II Substances presenting medium danger

III Substances presenting low danger
Marine Pollutant
This an indicator specifying if the substance is or is not a marine pollutant. See Chapter 2.10
for a definition of a Marine Pollutant. If the indicator is blank the substance is not a marine
pollutant. If the marine pollutant indicator is not blank it will be one of the following:
P

indicates a marine pollutant.

PP

indicates a severe marine pollutant.

indicates a N.O.S. entry where a particular substance might or might not be a marine
pollutant. A mixture containing 10% or more of marine pollutants, or 1% or more of a
severe marine pollutant is a marine pollutant.

Packing Instructions and provisions

Packing instruction codes refer to the relevant packing instruction(s) in section 4.1.4 of
the IMDG Code. The packing instructions indicate the packagings (including large
packagings), which may be used. Clicking on the blue packing instruction number will
display that packing instruction in a separate window.
When applicable, packing provision codes will be displayed below the Packing
Instruction codes. These codes refer to the relevant special packing provisions as listed at
the end of the packing instruction. Clicking on the blue packing provision code will
display that special packing provision in a separate window.
IBC Instructions and Provisions
Page 15

IMDG Code 2004 Edition

Version 7

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

If a substance may be transported in an Intermediate Bulk Container, this gives the instruction
number. Click on the IBC code to view the text for that IBC code.
When applicable, IBC special provision codes will be displayed below the IBC code. Click on
the IBC special provision code to display the text for that IBC special provision.
Tank Instructions and Provisions
If a substance may be transported in a portable tank (UN and/or IMO), these codes refer to the
tank instruction number. Click on one of the instruction numbers to view the instruction text.
When applicable, Tank special provision codes are displayed beneath the tank instruction
codes. Click on the tank special provision code to display the text for that tank special
provision.
Special Provisions
One or more numbers referring to special provisions listed in chapter 3.3 of the IMDG Code.
Click on any number to view the text of the provision.
Limited Quantity
Less onerous regulations apply when the content per inner packaging is not more than this
weight or volume, and the total gross mass of the package is not more than 30 kg (20 kg for
stretch- or shrink-wrapped trays). The value shown is the maximum quantity per inner
packaging authorized for transport of the substance or article concerned according to the
provisions for limited quantities in Chapter 3.4. The word "None" in this column means that
the substance or article is not permitted to be transported under the provisions of Chapter 3.4.
Click on it to view the details in chapter 3.4.
Labels
Click this button to view the hazard labels. You may obtain a hard copy of the label by
clicking on the Copy button. A beep will confirm that the image has been copied to the
clipboard. Now use a package such as Paint or Word to paste and print a hard copy.
Emergency Schedule (EmS) Number
Emergency Procedures (EMS) are to be followed in case of incidents involving dangerous,
hazardous or harmful substances, materials or articles. Emergency schedules detailing these
procedures are listed in two categories:Fire

Codes range from F-A to F-J.

Spillage

Code range from S-A to S-Z.

Underlined EmS schedules indicate a substance, material or article for which the emergency
procedures vary from the group emergency schedule; such variations are specified for the
proper shipping name under each emergency schedule. Synonyms, secondary names, initials,
abbreviations of names, etc., for which the EmS schedules are underlined in the Dangerous
Goods List are not listed on the emergency schedule; it is necessary to consult the emergency
schedule under the United Nations Number and the proper shipping name.
For dangerous goods allocated to N.O.S. or other generic entries, the most appropriate
Emergency Schedule (EmS) may vary with the properties of the hazardous constituent. As a
consequence, shippers may have to declare different EmS schedules from those indicated in
this Code if, to their knowledge, such EmS schedules are more appropriate.
Flashpoint
This is the temperature at which the liquids vapour forms an ignitable mixture with air. It
can be measured by a closed-cup (c.c.) or open-cup (o.c.) test. For generic entries, the value
quoted is a range. Because of the presence of impurities, the flashpoint may be lower or
higher than the reference temperature indicated in the Dangerous Goods List for the
substance.
Page 16

Version 7

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Explosive Limits
For a gas, this is the concentration range in air that forms an explosive mixture. Entries that
include to [e.g. UN 1144, 1156] indicate that the upper value is unknown.
Stowage and Segregation
These requirements are in addition to the general requirements for this class that are given in
chapters 7.1 and 7.2.

7 MULTIMODAL DANGEROUS GOODS FORM

7.1

About the Multimodal Dangerous Goods Form

Chapter 5.4 in the IMDG Code describes the required documentation for dangerous goods
offered for transport. This form meets the requirements of SOLAS 74, chapter VII, regulation
4, MARPOL 73/78, Annex III, regulation 4 and the provisions of this chapter. The
information required by the provisions of this chapter is mandatory; however the layout of
this form is not mandatory. This program uses the Multimodal Dangerous Goods Form as
described in section 5.4.5.
The steps in making a Multimodal Dangerous Goods Form are :

Make a load of dangerous goods items

Complete their package and mass details

Make the actual Dangerous Goods Form and complete its necessary details

Print the form

Save it to disk for your future reference

Email, as an attachment, to another user of this system for their use

7.2

Make up the load of items

Click the Create Dangerous Goods Form button

in the toolbar or select Create
Multimodal Dangerous Goods Form in the Enquiry menu.
Fig. 20 Items in a load

The load items screen above shows a number of items already entered. However, when the
screen is first displayed the list of items will be empty. The Unit Type will default to Nontank.

Page 25

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Note. This program does not check whether or not the substances are allowed on Passenger
ships, in tanks, nor whether the substances are required to be segregated from one another.
Set the load characteristics
To enter a load, you should first of all choose the appropriate Unit Type.

Non tank :

Any container other than a tank.

Tank :

Tank means a portable tank (including a tank-container), a road tank vehicle,

a rail tank wagon or a receptacle with a capacity of not less than 450 l to
contain solids, liquids, or liquefied gases, as defined in Section 1.2 of the
IMDG Code.

Enter an item
Having chosen the Unit Type, you can add an item. With an empty item list, enter the first
item into the first blank line. To add more items, you need to create a blank line by either:

Clicking on the last item and pressing the Tab key, or

Clicking on the UN Number of the last item and pressing either the Down Arrow or the
Enter key.

UN NO
Enter the UN Number, if known. The substance name will be filled in automatically, along
with the rest of the fields (read-only).
Substance
If you do not know the UN Number, click the selection button at the end of the name field to
pop up the substance drop-down list in alphabetical order. Use the scroll bar to find the
substance. A quicker method is to enter the first few characters of the substance name before
clicking on the selection button. For instance, typing in NITR will force the drop-down list
to start at the NITRATES.
