1. Brief History:
The Meteorological Observatory,
Ahmedabad was established on
18th January 1893 and the
Meteorological
Centre,
Ahmedabad was established in
October 1974. It had limited
staff and few units at the time of
establishment but with time the
activities and responsibilities of
Met Centre, Ahmedabad has
increased
in
all
fields, for
rendering
the
Meteorological
services to the general public of
the state of Gujarat, and Union
Territory of Diu, Daman Dadra,
Nagar
and
Haveli
and
the
concerned
departments
of
Central and State Governments
like
Agriculture,
Irrigation,
Power, Flood Control, Relief and
Rehabilitation, Roadways and
Railways etc.,

are issued for:
1) Heavy rainfall
2) Cyclone
3) Cold Waves
4) Heat waves

4. Station is equipped
with:
1. Digital Met Data Dissemination
(DMDD) a ground based satellite
System
for
reception
and
dissemination of meteorological
information.
2. High Speed Data Terminal (HSDT)
System, a 256 Kbps Data Circuit for
transmission
and
reception
of
meteorological data.
3. High Performance Computing System
(HPCS) a platform for high resolution
weather modeling.
4. Inter Voice Responsive
System (IVRS)

General Weather Bulletins to


All India Radio Ahmedabad,
Rajkot, Vadodara, Surat, Bhuj
once a day containing past 24
hours summary of weather and
temperatures etc. in respect of
the Gujarat state, special warning
for
various
public
services
i.e.Private,
Revenue,
Police,
Public
works,
Railways
and
Irrigation,. Forecast (for Rainfall
and Temperature Change etc.) for
next 48 hours and Adverse
Weather Warning (for Heavy/Very
Heavy Rain/ Snow, High/ Low
Temperatures, Frost, Gail/Strong
Winds etc.), as and when
required.

Farmers Weather Bulletins to


AIR Ahmedabad, Vadodara,
Rajkot, Surat, Bhuj twice a day
containing Farmers Forecast (for
Rainfall, and Temperature Change
etc) for next 48 hours, Adverse
Weather Warning (for Heavy/Very
Heavy Rain/ Snow, High/ Low
Temperatures, Frost, Gail/Strong
Winds etc.), as and when
required, and outlook for next
consequent two days.
Quantitative
Precipitation
forecast for Sabarmati, Banas,
Narmada,
Tapi,
Mahi,
Damanganga catchment Areas
along with Heavy rainfall warning
and outlook for next consequent
two days to Central Water
Commission
(CWC)
authority
once a day in monsoon period
and twice during Flood Alert.
Heavy Rainfall/ Strong Winds
Warnings to various Registered
Warnees including State Revenue,
Agriculture, Irrigation, Railways,
Waterworks, Canals, etc as and
when required .
Low Temperatures Warning to
State Government authorities as
and when required.

Regular Services

(A) Non-Aviation Forecast


Services:

Local Forecast (for 24 hours)


for Ahmedabad and neighborhood
along with the observational data
is provided to All India Radio
Ahmedabad, Local Cable TV, Print
Media once a day regularly and
more times on their requirement
and edited/updated on IVRS four
times a day.
Local forecast for Ahmedabad,
Rajkot, Bhuj and Surat (along
with year wise and month wise
average values of meteorological
parameters for last ten years and
over all extreme values) and for
three
days
are
issued/updated/edited on IMD
and RMC, New Delhi Websites
once a day.

Daily and Weekly Weather


Reports for the
area are
prepared regularly and provided
to various Government and NonGovernment Subscribers.
Coastal Bulletins for coastal
area of Gujarat are issued twice
daily to coast guards. Cyclone
Alerts
and
warnings
are
issued
during
Cyclone
in
Arabian
Sea
to
Concerned
Collectors, Relief Commissioner,
Chief Secretary, AIR and Press.
Port and fisheries Warnings are
issued for Port and Fisheries
Officials.

(B)

Services to Agriculture
sector (Agromet
Advisory Services):

For preparation of
Districtwise Agromet Advisory by
different
AMFUs
and
District
Agriculture Officers in Gujarat, the
District Wise Quantitative Five Days
Weather
Forecast
for
various
meteorological
parameters,
The
State Composite Agromet Bulletins
are prepared by this office on every
Tuesday and Friday for both the
states and is further disseminated to
State Media, Senior Functionaries of
State Deptts. and to Agrimet Division
Pune.

(C) Seismological Services

The Earthquake Reports are


provided to the media and is
also incorporated in Daily
Weather
Report.
On
requirement
the
requisite
information is also made
available from IMD Head
quarter, New Delhi.
The Seismicity Map, Seismic
Zoning
Map
and
main
earthquake information is also
available on IMD and Met
Centre, Ahmedabad website.

(D) Aviation Services

Half hourly METAR(Met Report)


and three hurly TAFOR(Terminal
Aerodrome report) provided to
AAI and all airlines
Aerodrome Warning issued in
case of significant weather like
thunderstorm,duststorm etc

7. Additional Activity /
Services on requirement

Special Aviation Forecasts


are issued on occasion of the
visits of VVIPs in the area i.e.
Gujarat
Forecast of weather and
Temperatures is issued to
Ahmedabad Administration on
occasion of VVIP visits.
Weather Forecast for cricket
match and other sports is
provided to organizers or media
on requirements.
Other
Various
Weather
Services
or
Information
required by organizations of the
Central and State Govts. e.g.
Agriculture, Irrigation Revenue,
Industries,
Health,
Education,Environment,Tourism
and Sports are either provided
them by Meteorological centre,
Ahmedabad or arranged from
the New Delhi Head Quarter.

Meteorological Department
The various forecast models
and
other
climatological,
seismological
and
current
information etc. are available on the
Met Centre, Ahmedabad website
imdahm.gov.in and IMD website
imd.gov.in

Research & Development

The officers and staff of


Meteorological Centre, Ahmedabad
perform the research work also by
sparing time from their routine
administrative and operational work.
Various
research
papers
and
scientific
reports
have
been
submitted by them for publication in
the
national
and
international
journals.

8. Modernization
Programme of IMD

About 35 Automatic Weather


Stations have been installed in
Gujarat and 66 Automatic
Rain-Gauges
have
been
installed under first phase of
the modernization Programme
of IMD.
A
High
Speed
Data
Computing System has been
installed
at
Meteorological
Centre, Ahmedabad and Model
products are generated and also
displayed in local website.
For regular watch on the
weather
in
Gujarat
and
adjoining
area
Doppler
Weather
Radar
is
been
installed at CDR Bhuj and in
the second phase they will
be installed at Met Centre,
Ahmedabad and at Veraval.
Dedicated Weather Channel:
Under Modernization Plan
of IMD (India Meteorological
Department) a Dedicated
Weather Channel is already
in
pipe
line
which
will
disseminate weather forecast,
warnings
and
other
meteorological,
agrometeorological
and
climatological information in
different languages including
Gujarati.

Additional Services
Inspection of Observatories,
AWSs and ARGs:
The
inspection
of
the
observatories,
AWS
under
jurisdiction
of
M.C.
Ahmedabad is being done by
staff and officers of this Office
under Inspectorate Section.
Data Bank:
Maintenance and supply of
meteorological
data
for
catering to the needs of
various agencies (Govt and
Private) of Gujarat State is
maintained under technical
unit.
