INTRODUCTION
Engineer the keyword of a major profession that has a respect from people in surroundings.
There are many types of engineer such as chemical engineer, mechanical engineer, civil
engineer and others. In the work fields engineers are the important person to conduct the
project and to create the originality of the works into something that have innovation along of
the increase of the technology. Nowadays, engineer need and compulsory to have a good and
better attitude in order to gain societys trust. The thing that an engineer must learnt is the
codes of engineering ethics. Not just engineer but technologist also need to learn. The ethics
contains lots of moral values to be absorbed into a person.
Engineer has huge responsibility to take care of, in order to bring the nation to be a
better place to live with a better facilities. The facilities created to ease society work/life. The
more useful innovation to society the more the society appreciate the engineers works. In
order to keep the dignity of an engineer form bad habit. Every engineers need to learn the
code of engineering ethics because to watch out the codes while in the working places
(awareness), to aware engineers responsibilities toward society and organization, to create
the understanding about the ethics, and to expose engineer to the any condition workplace
surrounding.
World today, has the advanced technologies, an engineer with an advanced knowledge
needed to conduct the technology to avoid any unwanted incident. Engineers must always
lead public safety whenever conducting any work. Engineer job is not only focus on the work
field but it also significant to help the society in any aspects needed. For sure the relation
between the society and engineers needed to collaborate in working the project run smoothly.
Engineer need to detect and avoid any dangerous that can harm workers and society. An
engineer must have good ethics, knowledgeable (about work and laws) and always concerned
about public safety.

SUMMARY
Codes of ethics is the mandatory course for engineers and technologist to be learnt before can
be registered as a professional engineers/technologist. It is to ensure the awareness of codes
of engineering ethics in society. It also to apply the awareness of codes of engineering ethics
at the workplace. The engineers need to emphasize responsibilities towards their organization
and society. The ethics also can educate engineers to be more honest and fair in doing the job.

DISCUSSION

Engineers must learn the codes of engineering ethics because it can build
interpersonal skills inside them. Ethics of engineer who will distinguish himself as a good
engineer or not. Codes of engineering ethics is one of compulsory courses that an engineer
needs to pass if the engineer want to be a professional engineer. Actually, this course is one of
three core courses as a requirement to register as professional engineers with Board of
Engineers Malaysia (BEM). Other two courses is Engineering Project Management and
Health & Safety at Work. All three courses are oblige to be taken as one of the requirements
for registration as a professional engineer with BEM. Codes of engineering ethics also called
as code of professional conduct listed by BEM. In Malaysia, if the engineer want to get their
professional tittle, they need to register under BEM.
In order of Engineers and technologist to fulfill their jobs they must take serious and
give more focus to human welfare in their duties. Engineers/technologist need to approve the
project before build it and need to avoid dangerous project. Any dangerous project can cause
bad effect to the society and give the organization bad image. Engineers/technologists must
investigate all aspect before run the given project and must stop the project immediately if the
any unwanted things ever happen. Ethical engineers/technologists will stop the problem
project and will continue if the problem solve. Non-ethical person will still doing the project
even the is some problem, a tiny problem could lead to a bigger problem in the future, such as
build a building on the dangerous hill without any support to the building. An engineer should
not only see present but need to think 10 years or more onwards. An engineer should not
leaked the secret of organization to public because it can maybe cause chaos.
Engineers/technologist should emphasize the field that their competence. Engineers
shall cover the projects that is specific under their qualification. If the engineer are specialise
under chemical engineering, the engineer should take care just the chemical part, not the civil
or electrical part, because maybe the chemical engineer are lack of knowledge of other
specialise work field. The engineer should not deal or even signed document or project that
not under his specialization. Engineers/technologists should not accepted any project that not
under his qualification.
Professional engineer should tell the truth to the public. He shall release the truth
information to society and organization. The information includes reports, statements and
result of the experiment conducted. The engineer should release statement that only under his

qualification. The untruth statement should not be release to public to keep the society always
in peace.
An engineer should act honestly for each of his client. Engineers must keep quiet all
known or potential issue that could impact or seem to impact their judgment of their jobs.
Engineers might not asked for money or take the valuable things, specifically from unknown
source that might get losing their work (no corruption). Engineers in public should not take
part in deciding decision with the service provided either in private or public.
A professional engineer should teach himself to be more ethics, lawfully, honesty, and
more responsible to enhance his reputation among society. They also must not fake their
professional qualification or trying to find a shortcut to get it. They also need to check project
document before sign it. They also shall take care the organization reputation. Engineers need
to work and respect to each others job and reputation.
Other code of ethics are refer from National society of professional engineer (NSPE),
American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChe) and many more. In NSPE the important
that engineer should take care of is about safety, public health and welfare. Safety is the really
important things because it related to people lives. Health and welfare public also important
to take care of.
Those engineer need to work only on the area their mastered. Those engineer must
work under their qualification in the specific specialization. They must not give their
signature on the project paper that not under their competence. They should emphasized the
originality of their work and no corruption should be involves. Those engineers need to give a
talk to public in full of manner. They should talk about what they only know and not the field
that they doesnt know. Other rules in the NPSE are corresponding with the codes of
engineering ethics in BEMs guidelines.

Diverse in AIChe in some of the codes, in AIChe there is a code where the engineer
need to avoid the harassment. It is the right of every worker to be able to go to work and do
their job without having to be harassed. They should be report if there any harassment happen
to them.

They also need to treat all colleagues with fair and respectful, appreciate their contributions and
capabilities in their job. Treating colleagues with some respect can give a good relationship in the
company. You cant treat colleagues badly and then expect them to treat you better. Be aware of your

body language, the voice tone, and your expression in all of your interactions at work. People
can hear and see what you're doing, people do judge.

CONCLUSION

Codes of engineering ethics is the compulsory ethics that the engineer/technologist need to
learn in order to achieve their professional tittle. With practicing the ethics the
engineer/technologist could be more trusted by the society and they can do their work easily
without any obstacle. The engineers need to emphasize responsibilities towards their
organization and society. The ethics also can educate engineers to be more honest and fair in
doing the job. This ethics are really important to avoid any problem in the society and keep
the society in peace.
