This case addresses drilled holes in boiler and pressure vessel construction that do not penetrate through the vessel wall. Up to 2 inch diameter holes are allowed if they satisfy certain requirements, including a minimum 0.25 inch remaining wall thickness and 2 times the hole diameter centerline distance between holes. Edges must have a 1/16 inch minimum radius. This case number must be shown on the data report. The committee considers such holes to have inherent reinforcement if they do not penetrate the wall and meet the stated conditions.

Case 1998 Drilled Holes Not Penetrating Through Vessel Wall Section I
(a) The diameter of the drilled holes does not exceed
2 in. (b) The drilled holes satisfy the requirements of PG32.1.3.1. (c) The remaining wall thickness satisfies the requirements of PG-31.3.2 for a flat closure, but shall not be less than 0.25 in. In making the flat head calculations, a value of C p 0.20 shall be used. (d) The center line distance between any two such drilled holes shall be at least equal to two times their average diameter. (e) Edges and corners of finished holes shall have a minimum radius of 116 in. (f) This Case number shall be shown on the Data Report.
Inquiry: In Section I construction, is it permissible
to consider radially drilled holes for instrumentation probes, which do not penetrate through the thickness of a shell, header, or head, as having inherent reinforcement? Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that radially drilled holes for instrumentation probes, which do not penetrate through the thickness of a shell, header, or head, may be considered as having inherent reinforcement, provided the following requirements are met.
