6 Hoes Trucks and Finishing 2016
Points:100
Due on 10/27/2016 at 7:00 PM . PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A FINAL DEADLINE GIVING YOU 10 Days to
Complete. Extensions will not be granted for any unapproved reasons
PROBLEM 1: EXAMPLE ON BACKHOE (30 Points) (Expected Time Investment 2 Hours)
With a 50 min-hr efficiency what is the average production in lcy/hr for a 2 cy short stick hoe
excavating well blasted rock? The average depth of excavation is 13 ft and the angle of swing is 450.
Assume other data same as discussed in the lecture slides.
PROBLEM 2: EXAMPLE ON TRUCKS (50 Points) (Expected Time Investment 4 Hours)
Several trucks and one backhoe are to be planned for a project. The available trucks and the backhoe
have the following details.
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)
The back hoe operates at 205 cy/hr and has a 2.7 cy heaped capacity bucket. It swings on a 2.2
minute load cycle.
The trucks available on the project are 12 cy capacity and have a 32 minute cycle time that
includes dumping, hauling and return. The filling time is dependent on the loader time.
The material has a 95% fill factor
The overall efficiency of the project is 45 minute-hour
the truck production is 11.32 cy/hr
Your FIRST QUESTION IS: Using the above details determine the balance point.
Considering the following data develop a graph of Number of Truck on the X axis and $/cy
on Y axis.
Loader with operator rate is
$200
/hr
Truck with operator rate is
$175
/hr
Your SECOND QUESTION IS
Assume that after graduating from CSUF you are working for a construction company. You
got the graph (in part D above) while planning for a new project. You know that your immediate boss
did not take this course at CSUF. So how what are those key points that you will say to your manger to
convince him/her about findings. You must include at least 3 data points from your graph to explain
your findings to your manager.
PROBLEM 3: EXAMPLE ON GRADER, FINISHING EQUIPMENT (20 points) (Expected Time Investment 1
Hour)
Estimate the number of hours required to grade a 7 miles of dirt road using a CAT 160M2 grader when
the ditching requires 9 passes with 1st gear, reshaping required 4 passes in 3rd gear and final grading
requires 3 passes in 4nd gear. Use Caterpillar Manual (available in Titamium) to determine the travel
speeds in each gear.
