ItisdifficulttofindsomethinginterestingtodowiththethirdconditionalofEnglish,but
studentsseemtofindtheexercisebelowfuntodo.
Grammatically,thepatternisrelativelystraightforward:thesocalledifclausecontains
had+pastparticipleandthesocalledthenclausetypicallycontainswouldorcould+have+
pastparticle(forexamples,seetheexercises).
Ofcourse,toactuallyteachthepattern,itismuchmoreeffectivetoputsomeexamples
ontheboardandhavethemlearntoimitatethepattern.Forthemajorityofstudents,such
technicaldescriptionsofpatternswouldbecompletelyuseless.
Ineachstory,thereisachainofeventswithonethingcausinganother,oneafteranother.
