Essay Writing Step by Step

Essay Structure:
Introduction
Lay out a 'roadmap' for the reader. State the 'theses' or argument you will be making.
Historical Background
Contextualise the essay. Mention other artists/makers or relevant social/cultural
movements.
Main Content
Most of your marks are gained in this section. Refer back to question and your
argument.
Use expert opinion (quotes and paraphrasing) to back up your points. (Remember to
cite correctly)
Rebuttal
Bring in expert opinions which are different from your own. Show how your argument
can stand up to criticism. You can weave this throughout your essay or keep as a
separate section.
Conclusion
Refer back to original question. Show how you have answered it list your main points
again.
