Pip Wheaton
Organisation: Enke
Describing herself as a peoples person, Pip Wheaton was driven by a personal
call to action to make a difference. For her leadership unfolded as journey rather
than a single- minded endeavour to achieve success for its own sake.
Pointing to the paradox of being at the helm of an organisation that seeks to craft
young people into leaders of the future, Wheaton says, I feel like I have sort of
ended up in this role almost by chance, ....that there was ever any real sort of

Page 5

|Jackie Lagus Portfolio|

Cell: 0714909462 jax@yebo.co.za
intention to try and aim for a position of leadership. Which is strange to say for
somebody who actually runs a leadership organization.
However, in the spirit of leadership, Wheaton recognised that the skills she learnt
studying morality and applied ethics had to be put to good use. Somehow the
theory that she learnt in an academic environment needed to be applied in
practical terms, and not just employed in heated debates with her fellow
classmates.
For Wheaton a vital tool in her leadership kit, is the ability to surround herself with
mentors and people who have the skills to help co-create success: One of the
biggest things for me, that has gotten me through the tough times, is actually
surrounding myself with people who either have the experience and the
knowledge...as well amazing, inspiring individuals who are doing work in similar
fields.
They constantly remind me that there are other wonderful people out there doing
amazing work, and that it can be tough and we will all get through it, or that we
do all get through it rather.
Tapping into the collective energy of those around her has enabled Wheaton to
pull together the expertise needed to establish the team at Enke. With the
formidable skills set of her colleagues and the spontaneity inherent in her less
conventional approach to life, Wheaton does not claim to have all the answers but
emphasizes the need for enthusiasm.
Passion, determination, a willingness to admit when we do not have the answers,
or when I do not have the answers and a real desire to support the people who are
in my team. They are probably the big ones, and also the fact that I am quite
crazy. I think you have to be a little bit crazy to take on the challenges that
running a youth leader organization throws up.
So what is it exactly that Enke does in supporting and promoting youth leadership
development?
According to Wheaton it has 3 main objectives: to connect, equip and inspire.
More than a catchy by line, in practise the organisation brings together youth
from across the socio-economic spectrums as a way to connect people whose
lives in the normal course of events would not intersect. This is done through
camps and meetings.
We have an annual forum where we bring together grade 11 learners from across
the country -from across a range of diverse backgrounds. We put them through a
program that gets them to understand each other, to develop empathy and to
understand the real lived experience of people from different circumstances.
We have them at the forum for a week, in addition to making them connect, we
also take them through a personal development program.

That is where the

leadership development comes in.

It is based on the emotional intelligence theory, so that to be a leader you need to
have self awareness, and you need to be able to manage yourself, as well as a
social awareness of others, and be able to manage and mobilize others.
So we make it really experiential and learner driven. It is youth to youth learning,
so all of our presenters and facilitators are young. [They are] so close in age that
the participants actually almost see them as equals. So they are role models for
them as well.
A lot of the facilitators come from a similar range of backgrounds, so that the
participants realize they can go to University too. Or they can go off and be an
entrepreneur - whatever it is that excites them.
Wheaton stresses the need for young people to link their dreams and ideas with
the real world context.
We equip them to be able to realize their own goals for the future. That is where
the personal leadership development actually comes in.

Top carpet cleaning technologies in Richardson

With top carpet cleaning technologies in Richardson available to help
maintain the health and lifespan of your carpet, there is no reason to be
concerned about harmful allergens and dust mites embedded in your carpet fibers
or their effects on the air quality in your home.
Innovation in carpet cleaning technologies over the past three decades has led to
an increment in choice when it comes to removing dirt and stains and maintaining
healthy carpets.
Individual carpet cleaning companies will promote their preferred methods, but it
may be useful to look at the benefits of Steam versus Dry Steam cleaning and
what the essential differences in these methods are.
Here are some benefits and characteristics of Dry Steam Cleaning and Steam
Cleaning:

The Steam Cleaning method uses hot water extraction to remove dirt and
allergens. Contaminants are flushed out using hot water and improved
cleaning technology has resulted in less residual moisture in carpets
leading to quicker drying time.

Steam cleaning is very effective in removing deep-seated dust, dirt and

soil from the hard to reach areas of your carpet due to the high pressure
and hot water used in this carpet cleaning method.

With Dry Steam carpet cleaning, hot water extraction is also used, but the
end result is a carpet that is almost dry to the touch.

Dry Steam Cleaning minimizes the opportunity of spots reappearing. The

spots that refuse to go away are caused by the wicking action from the
back of the carpet to the tips of the carpet fiber as it dries.

For carpet owners it comes down to individual choice. But at least you know that
whether Steam or Dry, you have the top carpet cleaning technologies in
Richardson at your disposal.

The GT40 Story (Brochure Copy)
Henry Ford II was the author of the GT40 story. With the weight of the Ford Empire
behind him and the grit to turn dream into reality, he set out to create a winning
racing car to beat the best. Ferrari was the benchmark. The 24-Hour Le Mans race
would be the battleground.
No time was wasted. Ford Advance Vehicles was created and under Eric
Broadleys direction, the GT40 project was born. By August 1963, Broadley had
designed the low, sleek coupe of the car that was earmarked to be number one on
road and track. The mid-mounted Ford V8 engine and monocoque chassis became
the signature specifications of the tough, muscular super car the world would
come to adore.
In June 1966 the GT40 took 1 st, 2nd and 3rd place at Le Mans. A year later, the
GT40 Mark IV took the title off Ferrari by four laps and the year after that the Mark
I claimed another victory in the famous Gulf Oil livery. Le Mans 1969 was a
legendary finish in endurance motor racing history, with the 2-second win by
Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver, ushering in the closing chapter on an impressive
track record.
As with all legends, the GT40 continues to evoke nostalgia for the groundbreaking
innovation of its time. Its pioneering design and engineering continues to inspire
successive generations, who can relive history every moment.
The CAV GT Story
Inspiration has been the driving success of the CAV GT. The car is a 21 st century
recreation of the GT40, modified for comfort and performance for the discerning
driver. None of its original hallmark features have been compromised in the
search for an improved driving experience.
Concessions have been made to comfort. Additional head and legroom, air
conditioning and Nubuck leather seats are some of the uncompromising interior
enhancements. Engineering of the suspension and brakes have been fine-tuned
for the ultimate road and track performance.

Prima Toys: Games for School Holidays
School Holidays. For some parents faced with the onslaught of endless rainy days
combined with bellows of Im bored, the July school break can elicit a
combination of fear and dread. Thankfully this can be mediated by creativity and
innovation. Enter the inventors and the products of their inspiration, and you have
abundant solutions to the equation of lengthy school holidays and unremitting
rain.
Which inventors you may be asking? If the names of Claudio Vicentelli, Leslie
Scott, Sam Savage, Richard Tait and Whit Alexander arent instantly recognisable,
possibly their puzzles and games are. The popular Geomag, Jenga, Shmuzzle
Puzzle and Cranium Cadoo are the hottest games on the shelves at the moment,
guaranteed to thaw out the winter chills.
The great advantage of games and puzzles over ready-made entertainment is
their longevity. Take Geomag as an example. From two simple components come
endless hours of entertainment value in which children can construct two and
three dimensional structures, from basic to intricate geometrical shapes. Inspired
by his own love of mechanics, design and architecture, Geomags inventor,
Claudio Vicentelli, found a way to exploit the principles of magnetic attraction that
could be applied to the creation of countless constructions. Whats more Geomag
has colour, panel, glowing and metal components that come in 42, 60 and 96
piece combinations.
Construction is the name of the game when it comes to Jenga. The wooden-block
tower-building game was invented in the early 1970s by Leslie Scott, a British
woman who had spent some of her teenage years in Africa. Jenga is Swahili for to
build. Players have to remove and stack blocks in an attempt to create the
highest tower possible, real pros it seem can manage 36-stories. And for those
undaunted by that challenge there is now Jenga Extreme, blocks shaped as
parallelograms that shift, teeter and change direction with each play. This is real
edge-of-the seat stuff.
If thats too extreme theres always shmuzzling! The concept of the Shmuzzle
Puzzle was the brainchild of an economics-professor-turned-inventor. It is a jigsaw
puzzle with a mathematical twist in its tail.

A salamanders tail to be exact. Dr Sam Savage, inspired by the tessellation
patterns of Dutch artist, MC Escher, created precisely identical salamandershaped puzzle pieces that can fit together in 87 billion combinations. Of course
only one of these combinations will yield the puzzles image. Theres also the
creative alternative of flipping the pieces over to create innocuous salamander
montages.
Puzzles have been a popular activity for kids over the years because they are
multidimensional. Besides, being a social activity puzzles also provide a great
challenge that is overwhelmingly satisfying when solved. It seems they can be
good for the brain too. Research has shown that playing games stimulates part of
the brain associated with creativity and there is no doubt that it helps to increase
attention span and aids fine motor development too.
The importance of developing the brain through games was integral to the vision
of the founders of Cranium Inc. Former Microsoft Executives, Richard Tait and Whit
Alexander, are the makers of the fastest selling independent board game in
history. They developed Cranium Cadoo after their success with the adult version,
simply called Cranium. Like its parent, Cranium Cadoo has been a hit, soaring too
on the wings of accolades such as the Parents Choice Gold Award and the
Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Best Toy Award.
The magic of Cadoo often referred to affirmatively as Candoois that it allows
each child to play the game to their particular strengths. For others, it provides
the opportunity to discover hidden talents. The game incorporates a variety of
activities requiring a minimum of two players.
Creative Cat unleashes the artist within as one has to draw fun clues and Cranium
Clay is used to transform clay into recognisable images. Word Worm gets you
doodling over fun words and puzzles and Data Head clears those cobwebs,
replacing them with fun facts. The stage is set for each child to shine in Star
Performer as players have to act out the activities set out in the Performer cards.
The ultimate objective is to get four tokens in a row and so to win the game.
Available on South African toy shelves in July, Cranium Cadoo is sure to be a
sensation.
Inventors it seems are not just mad professors alternately losing their spectacles
and their marbles. These are amazing folk that have created, invented and
inspired myriads of games

and puzzles that can fill those gaps and spaces and quell those complaints of Im
bored forever more.
