TEST 1: FLUIDS AND HYDRAULICS LABORATORY

(PRACTICAL TEST)

NAME

QUESTION : PELTON TURBINE OVERALL EFFICIENCY

The Pelton turbine is associated with considerable changes of kinetic energy but little changes in
pressure energy. Thus, obtaining efficiency of a turbine at various speeds is vital to obtain overall
efficiency of a Pelton turbine.
In the laboratory, students need to determine the Pelton turbine overall efficiency for two different
flowrates. Therefore measure turbine overall efficiency in relation to rotational speed include;
(i)
Volume flow rate
(ii)
Head
(iii)
Torque, brake and water power
The torque itself is given by the equation:
T = Fbr [Nm]
where Fb is the brake force reading on the spring balances and r is the pulley radius
The overall efficiency Et is thus:-

Et

Power absorbed by thebrake (Pb )

100%
Fluid power supplied(Ph )
2nT
gH i Q v

Given; radius of brake drum , r = 0.030 m

a) Describe the procedures in setting up the apparatus and conducting the experiment to determine
the Pelton turbine overall efficiency (aided with sketch) with two different flowrates.
(CO1PO5: 5 marks)
b) Set-up the equipment according to the written procedures in (a)
(CO1PO5: 5 marks)
c) Conduct the experiment of Pelton turbine with two different flowrates.
(CO1PO5: 5 marks)
d) Tabulate the data accordingly and determine the Pelton turbine overall efficiency. Show your
sample calculations.
