In the last five weeks, the
region has seen several inch-
es of rainfall that has made
planting corn and soybeans
difficult. Unfortunately,
area farmers are also facing
another challenge brought on
by the rain: a disease called
Wheat Head Scab.
Van Wert OSU Extension
Educator Andy Kleinschmidt
said his county has seen up
to 8 inches of rain in recent
weeks, while Glen Arnold
at the Putnam County OSU
Extension reports 9 inches in
the last 5 weeks.
Kleinschmidt describes
what the disease is and how
it was caused.
“Wheat Head Scab is
really bad this year; it’s
a disease that causes the
head of the wheat to not
put out a full, healthy ker-
nel of wheat. That head
will put out numerous ker-
nels and in some cases,
a scab can cause some
kernels to be underdevel-
oped. In other cases, the
scab can cause nearly the
entire head to be underde-
veloped. We are definitely
receiving reports this year
that indicate head scab is
higher than we’ve seen in
the past several years,”
he said. “Head scab is the
same disease that caused
the vomitoxin in last year’s

The City of Delphos
has reached an agreement
with the Van Wert County
Emergency Management
Agency, as well as that of
Allen County, to authorize
Van Wert County EMA to
activate the outdoor warn-
ing sirens in Delphos. This
applies to tornado warn-
ings that include Delphos
and Landeck. In such cases,
sirens will sound repeatedly
for 3-minute intervals until
the storm has passed. There
is no longer an all-clear siren
used as part of this system.
Delphos Fire and Rescue
and the Allen County EMA
will serve as backup and
Delphos Fire and Rescue will
continue its weekly test at
12:15 p.m. each Saturday.

DELPHOS —
Delphos City Schools Board
The

mously to move forward with
procedures to put the 1 percent
Earned Income Tax on the
November ballot Thursday.
Voters turned down the
first attempt to pass the
income tax in May.
This vote came with the
recommendations of both
the superintendent and the
finance committee which
met for nearly two hours on
Thursday prior to the board
meeting.
According to the finance
committee and Superintendent
Jeff Price, additional revenue
is needed to close a gap in the
district’s budget for 2011-12
school year and beyond.

in the tornadoes that hit north-

One woman was moved to
donate a bike after seeing pic-
tures of a child’s bike that had
been lodged into the second
floor of a home.
Kari Brackett, who lives in
the township that was hit hard-
est, said she had no excuse but
to donate the extra bike.
“Having kids in my home,
I know that they would be lost
without their bikes,” she said.

and supplies. It said it’s greatest
need now is money to help the
storm victims.
On Friday, school bus driv-
ers from Columbus will deliver
10 buses for use this summer at
Lake High School, which was
destroyed in the storm. The tor-
nado also damaged several of
the school district’s buses.
Earlier this week, the
University of Akron donated
two police cruisers to Lake
Township’s police department,
which lost six vehicles — half
its fleet — in the tornado.
“I’m almost speechless. I
can’t thank them enough,” said
Lake Township police Chief

Arlington Cemetery

tified or misplaced, in a scan-
dal marring the reputation
of the nation’s pre-eminent
burial ground for its honored
dead since the Civil War.

that the cemetery’s two civil-

than 300,000 people buried
there with military honors.
An average of 30 funerals are
conducted there every day.
Among those buried at the
cemetery are troops killed in
Iraq and Afghanistan, as well
as service members from past
conflicts dating back to the
Civil War.

boost for the president on
global warming, the Senate
on Thursday rejected a chal-
lenge to Obama administra-
tion rules aimed at cutting
greenhouse gas emissions
from power plants and other
big polluters.
The defeated resolu-
tion would have denied the
Environmental Protection
Agency the authority to move
ahead with the rules, crafted
under the federal Clean Air
Act. With President Barack
Obama’s broader clean ener-
gy legislation struggling to
gain a foothold in the Senate,
the vote took on greater sig-
nificance as a signal of where
lawmakers stand on dealing
with climate change.
“If ever there was a vote to
find out whose side you are on,
this is it,” said Sen. Barbara
Boxer, D-Calif., chairman of
the Environment and Public
Works Committee.
The vote was 53-47 to stop
the Senate from moving for-
ward on the Republican-led
Bill Clinton making another comeback

Tuesday’s Democratic runoff

Clinton was the headliner at a
rally Thursday night, wonder-
ing out loud why Reid’s seat
is in jeopardy.
Democratic candidates

requesting his help, seeking his
backslapping politicking and
high-dollar fundraising prow-
ess. And there’s little doubt
this political creature is bask-
ing in the attention, if not cov-
eting the opportunity to cam-
paign for Democrats where

found lax management of
the cemetery, where employ-
ees relied on paper records
to manage dozens of burials
each week and maintain thou-
sands of existing gravesites.
Whitcomb said at least 211
remains were identified as
potentially mislabeled or mis-
placed and that there could
be more.
“We found nothing that
was intentional, criminal
intent or intended sloppiness
that caused this. ... But of
all the things in the world,
we see this as a zero defect
operation,” he told reporters
Thursday.
Whitcomb could not say
how old the mixed-up remains
might be or from what con-
flict, saying only that the
problem had been confined
to three areas of the cemetery
known as sections 59, 65 and
66.
Whitcomb said he did
find two cases of mis-marked
graves in section 60, the area
for veterans from Iraq and
effort to restrain the EPA.
Sen. Joe Lieberman,
I-Conn., predicted the vote
would “increase momentum
to adopt comprehensive ener-
gy and climate legislation this
year.”
But Obama still needs 60
votes to advance his energy
agenda, and Democrats don’t
have them yet. Sen. James
Inhofe, R-Okla., said the vote
made clear that a majority in
the Senate back either a delay
or an outright ban on “the
Obama EPA’s job-killing,
global warming agenda.”
Republicans, and the six
Democrats who voted with
them to advance the reso-
lution, said Congress, not
bureaucrats, should be in
charge of writing climate
change policy. They said the
EPA rules would drive up
energy costs and kill jobs.
But Democrats, referring
frequently to the Gulf oil
spill, said it made no sense
to undermine efforts to cur-
tail greenhouse gas emissions
and reduce dependence on oil
and other fossil fuels.
The effort to block the
rules “is an attempt to bury

during the 2008 race after a
series of campaign-trail out-
bursts. He called Obama’s
opposition to the Iraq war a
“fairy tale” and questioned
whether the first-term Illinois
senator had the experience
to lead the country. Clinton
fumed that Obama’s cam-
paign “played the race card
on me” after Clinton had
compared Obama’s success
in South Carolina to that of
Jesse Jackson, a parallel that
black leaders suggested was

last year that the remains of
her sister, Air Force Master
Sgt. Marion Grabe, who had
been buried at Arlington in
March 2008, had been moved
to a new grave site. Nolte
said she went to Arlington
to find out that her sister’s
urn had been buried on top
of another soldier, but then it
was disinterred and moved to
another grave site. She said
she had not been informed of
the transfer.
“I made them unearth the
urn so I could see the name,”
Nolte said in a phone inter-
view Thursday. “I have peace
knowing my sister is indeed
in the right place.”
As for the Army investiga-
tion, “I think that it’s a good
thing that the truth is coming
out, and it’s certainly a situ-
ation that needs to be recti-
fied,” she said.
Separately, the Army is
investigating whether the
cemetery’s deputy superinten-
dent, Thurman Higginbotham,
made false statements
to service investigators.
Higginbotham, who ran the
day-to-day operations at the
cemetery, has been accused
by former employees of cre-
ating a hostile work environ-
ment and breaking into their
e-mail systems.
Higginbotham is on
administrative leave, pending
further review.

ing a veto and becoming law

Texas, Texas A&M discuss Big 12 future

AUSTIN, Texas — With
the future of the Big 12 seem-
ingly up for grabs, the presi-
dents and athletic directors of
Texas and Texas A&M met
Thursday to discuss the future
of their athletic programs
after Colorado accepted an
invitation to join the Pac-10
and with Nebraska weighing
a move to the Big Ten.
A person briefed about
the discussions said the situ-
ation was “still fluid” and the
Texas schools could stay in
the Big 12. The person, who
spoke on condition of ano-
nymity because of the sensi-
tive nature of the situation,
added everyone was wait-
ing for Nebraska’s expected
announcement today.
If Nebraska also leaves
the Big 12, other schools
could follow. The Pac-10 is
reportedly interested in invit-
ing Texas, Texas A&M,
Oklahoma, Oklahoma State
and Texas Tech to form a
16-team league, while the
Aggies could also head to the
Southeastern Conference.
Among topics discussed
was how the Big 12 could
operate with fewer teams, the
person added, and the conse-
quences such as possible liti-
gation should there be a mass
exodus that could leave some
teams behind.

director Chris Plonsky met
with Texas A&M president
Bowen Loftin, AD Bill Byrne
and other university system
officials at an undisclosed
location. Baylor was also rep-
resented in those discussions
but Texas Tech officials said
they were not there.
U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, a
Democrat from Waco, the site
of Baylor, urged Texas law-
makers to immediately hold
public hearings on any poten-
tial move by the schools.
Dodds has said he wants
to keep the Big 12 togeth-
er; Texas A&M spokesman
Jason Cook added the talks
Thursday included “several
topics of mutual interest to
both institutions” but that “no
decisions were made or agree-
ments reached.”
During a conference call,
Pac-10 Commissioner Larry
Scott declined to comment
on what other schools may be
invited. Texas did not com-
ment on Colorado’s decision
to leave.
Baylor and Texas Tech
officials have announced that
even if the Big 12 breaks
apart, they want to remain
with Texas and Texas A&M
as members of the same con-
ference. Baylor, the only pri-
vate school in the Big 12,
could get left behind.
“Baylor is working fever-
ishly to keep the Big 12
together,” AD Ian McCaw
said Thursday. “It is of special
importance to keep the four
Big 12 schools from Texas
together.”
Though there is expected
to be political pressure to do
so, the office of Texas Gov.
Rick Perry denied reports
that he asked officials from
the four schools to meet with
him Thursday to discuss their
futures. Perry is running for
re-election and was scheduled
to attend the state Republican
convention in Dallas begin-
ning Thursday night.

who now works as a special
adviser to Loftin, said foot-
ball programs are carrying
an increased financial burden
to support other sports, so

“You look at the level of
funding that all programs need
to have and it’s a business deci-
sion that universities now have
to make,” Slocum added.
Edwards was a state law-
maker in 1989 when he con-
ducted public hearings on the
possible breakup of the old
Southwest Conference. He
added the hearings slowed the
process and ultimately helped
Baylor and Texas Tech join
them in the Big 12.

When describing the mysterious concept

called purgatory, the catechism of the Catholic
Church starts with the basics.
“All who die in God’s grace and friendship,
but still imperfectly purified, are indeed as-
sured of their eternal salvation; but after death
they undergo purification, so as to achieve the
holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven,”
the text states. “The Church gives the name
Purgatory to this final purification. ... The tra-
dition of the Church, by reference to certain
texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire.”
Alas, any distressed “Lost” viewers who
rushed to the Vatican website after the show’s
finale found no insights about the smoke mon-
ster, the Dharma Initiative, those mysterious
“4 8 15 16 23 42” numbers or why the fate of
the world depended on a pool of light on one
very strange island.
At least one member of the U.S. Catholic
hierarchy has owned up to being tuned into
the “Lost” phenomenon from the beginning.
At the end, all Archbishop John J. Myers of
Newark could do was understate the obvious.
“I’ve enjoyed the series, considering it to
be akin to science fiction,” he noted, react-
ing to the raging debates about the religious
symbols and language that dominated the final
moments. “While the Catholic Church does

believe in Purgatory, I’m not sure that the se-
ries presents an accurate understanding of our
beliefs.”
Before the finale, the scribes who had been
running “Lost” -- Damon Lindelof and Carl-
ton Cuse -- said their creation would end by
focusing on how the Oceanic Flight 815 sur-
vivors answered ultimate questions about the
wounds, conflicts and sins in their pasts. The
key word, they agreed, was “redemption.” All
of that pain and suffering had a purpose.
The final episode blended together lots of
vague theology, philosophy, pop psychology,
religious symbols and references to popular
books and movies. Think of it as “Our Town”
meets “The Sixth Sense,” with dashes of
“Ghost,” “Field of Dreams,” “It’s a Wonder-
ful Life” and, at the last minute, a comforting
nod to “All Dogs Go to Heaven.”
After years of flashing back and forth in
time, the final year’s action centered on events
in two parallel time sequences -- the climac-
tic battle to determine the island’s fate and a
purgatorial “sideways” timeline in which the
characters gained insights into their troubled
lives, before and after the fateful crash.
At the end, the castaways gathered in a
church sanctuary for one last group hug be-
fore entering eternity -- an ocean of bright
light outside the exit doors. The big chat ex-
plaining these final events -- reuniting the
show’s Christ figure, Jack Shephard, with
his father, Christian Shephard -- was lit by a
stained-glass window containing symbols of
Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and
Buddhism.
But was the show, as some had theorized
all along, actually built on the concept of pur-
gatory? Hadn’t Lindelof told The New York
Times in 2006: “People who believe that
they’re in purgatory or that they’re subjects
of an experiment are going to start reassess-
ing those theories. ...”? The creator of “Lost,”
J.J. Abrams, had denied the purgatory theory,
too.
The finale’s spirituality shocked many crit-
ics, including one or two who were so upset
that they retroactively (flash backward) dis-
missed “Lost” as a whole. But veteran Wash-
ington Post writer Hank Stuever, drawing on
his Catholic-school past, said it’s time to ad-
mit the obvious.
In the final five minutes, “I realized that the
purgatory camp had been right all along, that
Occam’s razor (the simplest solution is usu-
ally the correct one) had worked,” he argued.
“Oceanic 815 crashed.
“Some of its souls awoke in a realm that is
neither heaven nor hell.
“It’s limbo. ... Jack Shephard and his fellow
travelers were brought there to resolve a num-
ber of problems between heaven and hell.”
But some Catholic viewers struggled to rec-
oncile church teachings with the limitations of
a product created in Hollywood, a place that
has its own definitions of terms such as “sin,”
“repentance,” “redemption” and “savior.”
Now, the creators of “Lost” have offered a
glimpse of purgatory -- lite.
“From a theological point of view -- well,
you can’t have ‘purgatory’ per se without God,
without Christ,” said Amy Welborn, a popular
online Catholic commentator. “But given a
vague, non-specific Christ-less spirituality, I
really don’t see an argument that the sideways
realities in the final episode, at least, weren’t
meant to be purgatory.”

Oil spill gets worse with every look

HOUSTON — With each new look by sci-
entists, the oil spill just keeps looking worse.
New figures for the blown-out well at
the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico show the
amount of oil spewing may have been up to
twice as much as previously thought, accord-
ing to scientists consulting with the federal
government.
That could mean 42 million gallons to
more than 100 million gallons of oil have
already fouled the Gulf’s fragile waters,
affecting people who live, work and play
along the coast from Louisiana to Florida —
and perhaps beyond.
It is the third — and perhaps not the last —
time the U.S. government has had to increase
its estimate of how much oil is gushing.
Trying to clarify what has been a contentious
and confusing issue, officials on Thursday
gave a wide variety of estimates.
All the new spill estimates are worse than
earlier ones — and far more costly for BP,
which has seen its stock sink since the April
20 explosion that killed 11 workers and trig-
gered the spill. Most of Thursday’s estimates
had more oil flowing in an hour than what
officials once said was spilling in an entire
day.
“This is a nightmare that keeps getting
worse every week,” said Michael Brune,
executive director of the Sierra Club. “We’re
finding out more and more information about
the extent of the damage. ... Clearly we can’t
trust BP’s estimates of how much oil is com-
ing out.”
The spill was flowing at a daily rate that
could possibly have been as high as 2.1 mil-
lion gallons, twice the highest number the
federal government had been saying, U.S.
Geological Survey Director Marcia McNutt,
who is coordinating estimates, said Thursday.
But she said possibly more credible numbers
are a bit lower.
And the estimate does not take into account
the cutting of the riser pipe on June 3 — which
BP said would increase the flow by about 20
percent — and subsequent placement of a
cap. No estimates were given for the amount
of oil gushing from the well after the cut. Nor
are there estimates since a cap was put on the
pipe, which already has collected more than 3
million gallons.
The estimates are not nearly complete and
different teams have come up with different
numbers. A new team from the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institute came in with even
higher estimates, ranging from 1 million gal-
lons a day to 2.1 million gallons. If the high
end is true, that means nearly 107 million gal-
lons have spilled since April 20.
Even using other numbers that federal
officials and scientists call a more reasonable
range would have about 63 million gallons
spilling since the rig explosion. If that amount
was put in gallon milk jugs, they would line
up for nearly 5,500 miles. That’s the distance
from the spill to London, where BP is head-
quartered, and then continuing on to Rome.
By comparison, the worst peacetime oil
spill, 1979’s Ixtoc 1 in Mexico, was about
140 million gallons over 10 months. The
Gulf spill hasn’t yet reached two months. The
Exxon Valdez, the previous worst U.S. oil
spill, was just about 11 million gallons, and
the new figures mean Deepwater Horizon is
producing an Exxon Valdez size spill every
five to 13 days.
On Thursday, President Barack Obama
consoled relatives of the 11 workers killed
in the oil rig explosion, acknowledging their
“unimaginable grief” and personally assuring
the families he will stand with them.

support efforts to update federal law limiting
the amount of money the families can col-
lect.
“He told us we weren’t going to be forgot-
ten,” said Keith Jones of Baton Rouge, La.
“He just wanted us to know this wasn’t going
to leave his mind and his heart.”
Jones’ 28-year-old son, Gordon, was work-
ing on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig leased
by BP PLC when it exploded and then sank.
Later in the day, the White House released
a letter from Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen,
who is overseeing the crisis for the gov-
ernment, inviting BP Chairman Carl-Henric
Svanberg and “any appropriate officials from
BP” to meet Wednesday with senior adminis-
tration officials. Allen said Obama, who has
yet to speak with any BP official since the
explosion more than seven weeks ago, would
participate in a portion of the meeting.
