Introduction
In this drama that explores greed and corruption in American business, Giovanni
Ribisi plays Seth Davis, an intelligent and ambitious college dropout who runs a casino in his
apartment. Eager to show his father that he can succeed, Seth lands a job with a small stock
brokerage firm.
He is given a space in the company's "boiler room," where he makes cold calls to
prospective clients. As it turns out, Seth has a genuine talent for cold calling, which gains him
the approval of his superiors, the admiration of his father, and the attentions of one of his coworkers, Abby Hilliard (Nia Long). However, the higher up the ladder Seth rises, the deeper
he sinks into a quagmire of dirty dealings, until he's breaking the law in order to keep his
bosses happy and his paychecks coming.

Review

magine having the chance to be fabulously rich in an incredibly short amount of time. Imagine

being haunted by your fathers success and his continual decry of everything you ever did. Seth
(Giovanni Ribisi of Saving Private Ryan, The Mod Squad, and Friends fame), the central
character in the Boiler Room finds himself in this situation and we, the viewers, are invited to join
him in probably the most exciting three months of his life.
Picking up on the excitement of the current trend of successful IPO (Initial Public Offerings) of
technology-related stocks, Boiler Room chronicles Seths brush with fortune and success. More
deeply though, Boiler Room comes down to Seths relationship with his father. Seths father, played
by Ron Rifkin, has never outwardly approved of anything Seth has accomplished nor provided Seth
with a loving fatherly figure. In an effort to prove himself to his fatherand excited by the chance to
make millions within the first 3 years of employmentSeth joins a fast-paced, Generation-X
staffed brokerage firm. Amazed at the fortune that these 20-something brokers are amassing, Seth
works hard to quickly move up in the ranks of the firm. These young men are concerned with nothing,
but getting rich, as one of the character remarks, they simply have more money than they know what
to do with. After some amazing coincidences, Seth slowly puts together the pieces and realizes that
this firm is doing more than a little under hand work.
Boiler Room is rated R for really only one reasonlanguage. Hardly one second of Ben Afflecks
on screen time goes by without his utterance of the f-word. It seems as though the screenwriters feel
that every sentence needs to be colored by such language. With just a few minor characters in the
background doing anything drug related, it hardly constitutes anything worth mentioning. Since these
men are obsessed with simply money itself, bed scenes are almost completely absent. Boiler Room
emphasizes Seths good choices to improve his future and his relationship with his father. Seth never
quite seems to be interested in the money, but simply the feeling of accomplishment and the hope of
respect from his father. Seth continues driving a Volvo station wagon and living in a small apartment
while his peers are buying Ferraries, Lamborghinies, and huge houses.
Boiler Room shows first hand the excitement of the stock market and the disaster that extreme
greed can leave behind. In retrospect, it was refreshing to see Seths good choices exemplified and the
results of his peers lack of foresight.

5 Lesson that we can learn from Boiler Room

1. Create a new belief system The first thing the firm did when bringing in new talent was
to install a new belief system. In fact, if you came in with any prior experience you couldnt
work there. Creating new beliefs means
you start from nothing You need to be clear before you can create. A great meal is always
served on a clean plate.
When you become an employee of this firm you will make your first million
within 3 years. There is no question about whether or not you will become a
millionaire working here. The only questions is how many times over.
2. Speak your new reality into existence Worlds are created through your words. We have
the ability to leave one existence and
walk into a new one simply by speaking it. Your reality is created through your
conversations
The conversations that you have with yourself, the conversations that you have with others
and the conversations that others have about you.
I am a millionaire. Its a weird thing to hear right, tell ya.
its a weird thing to say I am a f***ing millionaire.
3. Get a team and give them evidence that your new reality is possible and already
exists When building a team, the team needs to believe in you and where youre taking
them. A new belief system needs to be created to support the new reality that youre enrolling
them in. Once the seeds are planted, theyre nurtured by evidence that the new reality is
already in existence. If you want to create success fast immerse your team in an environment
where the new reality is already taking place.
They say money cant buy happiness? Look at the f***ing smiling on my face. You want
details fine.I drive a Ferrari, 355 Cabriolet. I have a ridiculous house in the South Fork.
I have every toy you can possibly imagine. And best of all kids.Im liquid.
4. The success of the team comes before your own Your team members need to have a
relatedness with one another, be respectful and have an interest in the well-being of the team.
The team breaks down when personal interests take precedence over the teams goal.
We expect everyone here to treat their co-workers with a certain level of respect.
5. Young minds are the best for uncommon ideas The worst phrase you can say on
the road to success.I know that already. People who know it all make great teachers.
Nothing wrong with teaching. Its a very admirable profession, but have you ever noticed that
most of the people who are making the biggest impact in the world and creating the biggest
successes arent teachers? In order
to create uncommon success you need to be open to new ideas and different ways of doing
things. Someone
who claims to know everything has usually already placed a ceiling on what theyre willing
to learn and the way theyre willing to learn it.
We dont hire brokers here, we train new ones
6. Work is king In order to succeed you need to have passion, energy and be willing to put
in a TON of work. People often get turned off by the word work. It tends to be synonymous
10

with pain. In some ways that could be true. No matter what you do there will always be some
aspects of it that you dont enjoy doing. The best way to create your own success is to do
something that you love. When you love what you do the work comes easy and everything
else youre looking for follows.
Now that you know whats possible let me tell you whats required. You are required to
work your f***ing ass off.
7. You need to learn how to swim first- In any venture you have to get the knowledge to
win before you can create the win. People get trapped in careers that they no longer enjoy
because they dont want to start over. If you wanna do it you have to learn how, knowledge is
the precursor of effective action.
You need to learn this business and now is the time to do it. Once you pass the test, none
of that is gonna matter.
8. Moving forward often involves sacrifice Ive seen a lot of people stay in situations that
theyre miserable in because they didnt want to make the sacrifice to make things better for
themselves. Were all guilty at one time or another. You want a new job, business,
relationship, body, etc. But often in order to get better things will need to get worst. In order
to speed up you will have to slow down; in order to make more you will need to give more.
Its the nature of life. For every positive action theres a negative reaction. You cant get
around it, trust me, Ive tried. If you want to improve your circumstances and take on more in
life youre going to have to lose parts of your current identity and give up some things about
who you say you are in exchange for becoming the new person that you want to be. If you
want membership into a new existence have to pay your dues first.
Word about being a trainee..your first 3 months youll make $150 per month. After
youre done training you take the Series 7, after that you become a junior broker where
youll be opening accounts for your team leader. When you open 40 accounts then you can
start working for yourself.skys the limit.
9. You have to wear blinders When you take bold steps to chase a dream and move
forward dont expect your friends and family to line up in droves to support you. Often times
their comfort in their own identities is tied to the people that theyre closest to. Often when
you change for the better you can be seen as threat to their self-esteem. Seeing someone that
theyre close to make moves to better themselves can be confronting, especially if they dont
have the courage to make tough sacrifices and face their own demons (most are not).
Criticism, laughter, negative judgement from those that are on you current level, take it all as
a sign that youre on the right path. Learn to run your own race and stay away from the
negative influence of people around you.
A word about being a trainee.friends, parents, other brokers, theyre gonna give you
s***. Its true, 150 dollars, not a lot of money. Pay them no mind. Your friends are s***,
when you tell them you made $25 grand last month theyre not gonna believe you. F***
em!

10. Having a big life is not for everyone Truth of the matter is that most of us talk about
living big but most of us really just want to be comfortable with minimal adversity. We resist
our challenges instead of being interested in what lessons they have to offer. If the road to
success was easy everybody would be successful.
A narrow path can only hold so many people.
Go home and think about it, think about whether or not its really for you. If you decide it
isnt its nothing to be embarrassed about. Its not for everyone.
