MAPÚA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Outside Plant Design

DESIGN OBJECTIVES
Statement of the Problem
Seven BTS sites, with one considered as the Hub station are to be connected in a ring
topology considering a fiber in the loop system. The hub station is located Masambong, Quezon
City and the six base transceiver stations are located within Del Monte Avenue, Roosevelt
Avenue and West Avenue, Quezon City. The team is to connect the hub and the base
transceiver stations and provide within this Fiber in the loop system an FOC service facility.

The Objectives of the Outside Plant design are as follows:

 To design an outside plant using fiber optic cables that will provide the seven stations in
a synchronous digital hierarchy ring employing underground, aerial connection or
combination of the two.
 To propose an outside plant design using fiber optic cables via a ring topology to provide
connection on six base transceiver stations with one acting as the hub. The hub is
located at Masambong Quezon City and the others are distributed within the areas of
Del Monte Avenue, Roosevelt Avenue and West Avenue, Quezon City
 To design a fiber optic transmission system that will meet the required loading of the
topology mentioned earlier.
 And most importantly, to be able to apply what we have learned in our lecture class and
be able to utilize what we have learned in order to design an outside plant employing
fiber in the loop system as prescribed by the instructor.

DESIGN PROCEDURES
PLANNING

o Plotting the location of the base transceiver station on a street map.

o Visiting the location for site surveying.
o Identifying the shortest cable route linking the stations creating a ring topology with no
common pole used and intersection within the connections.
FIELD WORK

o Locating the hub to start the field survey.

o Familiarizing the assigned area – hub station and base transceiver stations.
o Verifying the field if aerial cable installation is allowed.
o Measuring distances of each post to be installed in the area of route.
o Identifying the following information for each post.
o type of post
o type of extension arm
o type of guy
o exact location and distances for each post
o if new pole is needed
DOCUMENTATION

o Gathering all the data from the field survey.

o Drawing the detailed engineering plan.
o Choosing properly the equipment to be used based from the design requirements (e.g.
STM, fiber optic cable, etc.).
o Computing for the fiber optic transmission power budget.
o Identifying the bill of material.
o Compiling and finalizing the documentation parts.

DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS
The following are the restrictions and guidelines for this design:

 Any pole can be used.

 Any commercially available materials may be used.
 Consider “green fields and blue skies”.
 Provide different cable routes in employing the ring topology.
 Use Single Mode Fiber Optic Cable.
 Fiber optic cable cutting length is 2km/reel.
 Utilize short haul or long SDH design or EPON.
 The telephone, switch or PBX, router if there is any, and multiplexer equipment may
freely be chosen by the designer provided they work together seamlessly.
 E1/TDM, SDH, PDH or Ethernet may be used as transmission carrier.
