Genetic disease characterized by


-increased intestinal iron absorption
-and increased tissue iron
deposition
Secondary iron accumulates in the
-liver causing enlargement and
-cirrhosis
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
1. Dyspnea on exertion
2. Fatigue

How do we fix it?
THE FIX: Phlebotomy
THE BAND-AID:

GOAL remove Excess Iron


1. Phlebotomy remove 500mL of blood
- each week for 2-3 years. Until iron
stores are depleted, then less frequent

3. Palpitations
4. Angina
5. Tachycardia
6. CHF
7. MI
8. Pallor
9. Puritis
10. Jaundice
11. Increased Capillary Refill Time
12. Bronzing of the skin
13. Cardiomyopathy
14. Arthritis
15. Testicular Atrophy

Common causes of Death are:


1. Cirrhosis
2. Liver Failure
3. Hepatic Carcinoma
4. Cardiac Failure

***Early Diagnosis life expectancy is


Normal.

LABS
Elevated Iron (Normal 2-6g)
Elevated Serum Ferritin
TIBC
Dx made by Biopsy or Molecular
Testing.
