The industrial applications of fluidized bed reactors is as follows:

1) Silicon Production in a fluidized bed reactor:

A two-step process involving the pyrolysis of silane was developed.
In the first step, metallurigical-grade silicon is transformed into extremely pure
silane (SiHq) operations:
UCC has demonstrated the feasibility of this first step by operating a
LOO MT/year silane pilot plant. This reaction now is a commercial process.
2) Fluidized-Bed Catalytic Cracking (FCC) is the most important and widely
used refinery process for converting low value, heavy oils into more
valuable gasoline and lighter products. The typical FCC process will convert
75% or more of the heavy oils into gasoline and lighter products. Originally,
chemical cracking was accomplished by thermally heating the oil to
extremely high temperatures, but the catalytic process has almost completely
replaced thermal cracking. The catalytic process produces more gasoline
with a higher octane value, and with less unsaturated compounds.
3) Production of Polyethylene Using Gas Fluidized Bed Reactor:
Polyethylene is the most common thermoplastic and used in
a wide range of applications. There are various commercial
technologies available to produce polyethylene. Gas fluidized
bed polymerization is one of the later technology developed
and is commonly employed in the production of linear-low
density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high density polyethylene
(HDPE). Variants of this technology licensed by ExxonMobil

Chemical Co. and Basell Polyolefins continue to be used

today with a worldwide capacity of over 6 MMtpy.

4) Fluidised bed reactors in the ferroalloy industry: The FINMET

process, developed by Siemens VAI, and Circored process,
developed by Lurgi, are the only industrially available and
commercially operated direct reduction technologies for the
production of hot briquetted iron from iron ore fines.
