In 2002, J. Michael Rivera was the head designer for the Cold Foil Division of AMAGIC Foils,
which is the subsidiary company of K Laser. At the same time, he wrote and published GO
COLD, the first Cold Foil Printing process Handbook. He then led K Laser and the market to
know more about crafts of cold foiling and successfully achieved fame in the Western market.
In 2010, he became the Vice President for the Cold Foil Division of AMAGIC Foils and provided
professional training and demonstration of cold foiling technology to his customers. Also, he
held different speeches and published the book Coil Foil for Dummies in order to widely
spread and promote the use of cold foil.
Truly, it is a fact that if lamination and the processes of printing can be simultaneously
undergoing, efficiency will be greatly increased and wastage will be reduced. It saves the cost
and increases the competitiveness of the products. To achieve this goal, K Laser took it into
practice and developed the technology of Cold Foiling.
Cold foiling is not only a proven process in flexographic and offset label printing but also a
perfect fit for flexible packaging, gift tags, and security strips for packages.
K Laser, the industrys global leader in holographic cold foil manufacturing, offers total cold
Koldfoil printing solution that ensures easy, fast, and affordable foil applications. We not
only provide high performance foil but also develop adhesive formulas that work with the foil
and substrates. We also offer installing, designing, and technical consultation to help
customers for achieving the best foil images on printing. In the future, K Laser will continue to
strive for opening up the market of Koldfoil.

1. Print the cold foil adhesive
using standard printing plates
2. Nip the foil on top of the wet
cold foil adhesive
3. Cure the cold foil adhesive thru
the foil
4. Strip off the excess foils
1. Product information
Cold foiling is the process by which foil is transferred with the use of pre-printed
adhesive. Different from the traditional hot stamping foil, which uses heat transfer method
so that high temperature is needed, while cold Foil just need around 40-50 and use UV
Cold Mode to work, through bonding and separation to reach the transfer effect.
In the past, flexography printing and letterpress
printing are mainly used as craft. However, in the
recent years, the advanced In-line Cold Foil
Offset Printing Machine was launched. It provides
flexibility in our production process and further
reducing the production cost.
2. How it works
Using a standard printing plate, an image is printed by cold foil adhesive onto a substrate
from standard print station. Cold Foil technology is then laminated onto substrate under
nip roller, followed by passing under UV lamp station. The printed adhesive is cured under
UV light through the cold foil, bonding the foil onto the substrate. The foil is then stripped
and wound to a waste wind up.
3. Advantages of Koldfoil
i. Dramatic Register
Cold Foil provides precise registration as good as flexography printing quality.

7. Additional Hints
i. Adhesive coating quantity
The amount of adhesive used is very important in cold foiling. It needs to be adjusted
according to the printing area, for example, using less adhesive when printing fine
line, but when printing on large area and rough surface, the amount of adhesive used
need to be increased so that the foil can stick better.
ii. Substrates
PE and PP are the main substrates, PET is the minor one; Printing on paper is rare
as the surface of paper is rougher, the amount of adhesive used is greater, therefore
the cost will increase.
iii. Power of UV lamp for curing
The UV lamp is in the good working situation. The UV light needs to penetrate through
the foil and aluminum layer for curing. If the printing process is in high speed, the
automatic function of the UV lamp should be closed and high intensity UV light
benefits the printing effect. If the adhesive is inadequate cured because of large area
of the printing material or low output of the UV lamp, the speed of the printing process
can be lower in order to prevent the problem.
iv. Slitting angle for definition
The slitting angle is highly related to the pattern and cross-section. Larger slitting
angle is suggested when printing fine line and dots in order to attain a better effect.
However, a small slitting angle is suggested when printing large area.
8. Control of Koldfoil
i. Hardness of Nip
Generally, the hardness should be 85-90. It is too hard if the hardness is larger than
90 and it may cause poor transfer, while unclear image may be caused if the hardness
is less than 85.
ii. Development of photopolymer plate, go towards thinner and harder
In the past, the common photopolymer plate was usually 1.7mm thickness with
0.3mm sticky-back tapes and 50-55 degree hardness, while it changes to be
0.95-1.14 thickness with 0.1-0.15mm sticky backs. Hard printing plate will be easy to
distort under high printing pressure; meanwhile, the fineness will also be decreased
and the uneven adhesive may be occurred. Therefore, the hardness should be less
than 65 degree.
iii. Angles of lamination and separation

ceramics. Large space images should be 100-160 LPC (Line per cm) while the tiny
character should be 180 LPC or above. General formula for Anilox manufacturer is
0.23 < depth/diameter of nip roller < 0.33.
If the depth is too high, insufficient ink and skipping would be caused.
If the depth is too low, ink will leak out before transferring to the substrates and the
fineness will decreased.
vi. UV adhesive
A. Suitably choosing the UV adhesive can improve the quality of cold foil stamping.
B. Ensure if the dryness is enough. If it is enough, the properties of water-resistance,
solvent-resistance and acidic-resistance are strong.
C. Insufficient degree of cure of UV adhesive will lead to white spot, skipping and poor
fastness.
D. Insufficient amount of adhesive coating of UV adhesive will lead to white spot,
skipping, poor fastness and pinhole.
E. High viscosity of UV adhesive can improve the stamping quality. If collocating with
a high mesh count of the Anilox, the performance of line and spot will be decreased
but the performance of fine text and dot will be increased.
vii. Printing Pressure
This is the most important factor. If the printing quality is weak, even owning the most
advanced equipment, best cold foil film and adhesive, the stamping quality remains
weak. However, the printing pressure cannot be quantified at present, and it can only
be adjusted according to the experience of the printing staff
viii. Relation between substrates and Anilox
For different substrates (Paper, or plastic), different Anilox should be used. Generally,
the amount of adhesive coating for paper is 7g or above, i.e. 200-400 LPI (Line per
Inch); for plastic, it is 4~7g or above, i.e. 400-800 LPI (Line per Inch).
