Grammar 4 Chapter 16 and 17 Notes
Grammar 4 Chapter 16 and 17 Notes
Good evening level 4 grammar. As you know, the semester is wrapping up. With this in mind, we still
have to go through chapters 16, 17, and 20. Luckily these only cover 52 pages, so we can get through
them if you do chapter 16 and half of 17 at home. Thus, this weekend you will do just that by reading
through the grammar notes and doing select exercises.
Chapter 16: Coordinating Conjunctions
We will begin this on page 352, Coordinating Conjunctions. As you have already learned in your
writing class, a coordinating conjunction is a connector that creates parallel structure by combining two
ideas, such as in the following sentence:
Steve and John are coming to dinner.
Here you can see and as a connector for two people, the proper nouns Steve and John. You can also use
them in the other sentences in chart 16-1.
Now that we have the basics taken care of, here is a list of the charts and exercises you must go through
for this chapter:
- Exercises 2 and 3
- Chart 16-2 and Ex. 6.
- Ex. 10.
- Chart 16-3 (Notice the use of is and are here and focus on the formulae).
- Exercise 12
- Ex. 17 and Chart 16-4 (Remember that and and but are usually used to connect two
independent clauses, both separated with a comma).
- Exercise 18
And here is the end of chapter 16! Congratulations! Now let's go to the first half of chapter 17.
