Sermon: Keep Watching
Rev. James Steiner
Scripture: Isaiah 2: 1-5; Matthew 24: 36-44

Jesus said to them, Surely you will quote this proverb to me: Physician, heal yourself!" (Luke 4:3)
Dear Friends in Christ,
In the passage above, Jesus is speaking in Capernaum, near his home town. He encounters opposition, and quotes a
familiar proverb, which was used in Greek and Hebrew communities at the time. Essentially it means, before
attempting to correct others, make sure that you aren't guilty of the same faults.
I had an interesting moment a few weeks ago you might call it an epiphany, but I am not referring to the visitation of
the Wise Men (Epiphany), which we celebrate twelve days after Christmas.
So why did God send me this message, and why am I passing it along to you? Let me explain.
I am Board President of a faith-based counseling organization in Pittsburgh I know the Executive Director from
Seminary. A few years ago, she invited me to serve on the Board. (Lo and behold, after two meetings, I found myself
elected Board President!)

Several weeks ago, my Executive Director friend resigned, and the entire organization was thrown into chaos. To add to
the confusion, they have an outreach program my friend wants to purchase, so I am moderating (sometimes not so
successfully) discussions between her and up to twelve Board Members, all through email. You can imagine how that is
going
As we worked through our search plan, a name came up to serve as Acting (or INTERIM!) Executive Director. This
person was well-respected, and to make him even more appealing, he had actually been Executive Director previously,
before my friend became Executive Director.
Our Search Team was overjoyed! This guy was the OBV IOUS CHOICE to become the Interim Director! He knew
everyone, he knew how the organization worked, he even knew how to make coffee and what each light switch was for!
And here he was, simply dropped into our laps! Let's get going!
Can you guess the epiphany God gave to me?
Here I was, immersed in the chaos and disruption of an organization in transition, and I reached for the first life ring I
could find. I was so involved and immersed in events, I failed to see that I was guilty of the same behavior I have
criticized in the past. Instead of stepping back and "doing-my-Interim-thing," I was drawn to the first and quickest
solution, like a moth to a flame.
Physician, heal thyself!
My friends, maybe you're thinking this Interim thing isn't necessary, or perhaps it has taken too long to start. Why not
start reading resumes now? Why do we have to go through this process anyhow? Why not simply hire ME as your
pastor?
These are all perfectly reasonable questions I know, I just asked them myself at the non-profit!

But as wonderful as this manager is (and he will be great, for a short time), he is NOT the person to lead my non-profit
through a time of transition, self-reflection, and CHANGE. The organization is at a critical point in their history, and
my friend's departure is a PERFECT TIME to slow down and actually go through an intentional Interim process.
As I reflect on this uncomfortable and convicting epiphany delivered by God, I need to apologize to The Hill Church for
my ignorance of how an organization in transition might behave. Now I know, and whatever thoughts you might have
about how things are progressing, they are normal and OK.
We all (that includes me!) need to be patient, and allow God to lead us to the next pastor who has already been chosen
for our great church.
Thanks for your grace TO ME, and for your patience WITH ME.
In Christ,
Pastor Jim

HARVEST HOME 2016

It is that time of year when the Deacons will

be collecting food for the community for the
Thanksgiving season. The food will be
distributed through Covenant Cupboard in
time for the November holiday. For three
weeks food will be collected in the southeast
corner of the sanctuary near the organ. The following
are suggestions of food items by weeksthough it's not
a strict guideline, just a suggestion.
It is the Deacons hope that our congregation will
continue to be generous in bringing in food items and/or
money donations to support our Harvest Home Project,
and as a result, benefit Covenant Cupboard.
October 30: Canned and jarred foods; vegetables,
fruits, soup, jelly, spaghetti sauce, tuna, salmon, peanut
butter, beef stew, pumpkin.
November 6: Boxed and bagged food; flour, sugar,
macaroni and cheese, pancake mix, cereals, rice, cake
mixes, pie mixes, crackers.
November 13: Three-pound bags of apples and five
pound bags of potatoes which require the least cold
storage time. Other fresh vegetables and fruits cannot
be collected due to the lack of cold storage areas.

Shop Through
Amazon.com!

As the Christmas season quickly approaches, we

would like to remind you all to consider
shopping through Amazon.com where a
percentage of your purchases will go to OUR
church! Simply visit our website at hillup.org
and click on the Amazon icon, which can be
seen at the right hand side of the page when
you click on the Church News tab at the top
of the page. No other action is needed on your
part. If you are planning on shopping on
Amazon this holiday season or anytime at all,
please remember to do this, and tell your family
and friends too!

CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS WITH

YOUR CHURCH FAMILY
Please join your Church family at the
annual Christmas dinner on December
11th at 6:00P.M. in the Fellowship Hall.
Look for more information and a
reservation form in Church
bulletins this month. Please
reserve the date and plan to
celebrate with us this Christmas
season!

ITS SHOEBOX TIME!

Christmas is about sharing the gift of God's Son, Jesus Christ, with the world.
Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to poor children around the world
through gift-filled shoeboxes and the Good News of Gods love. You can share
Gods love with needy children in Honduras, Kosovo, or another country by
participating with other members of our church. We will have more information in an upcoming church
bulletin insert, or you can visit the Operation Christmas child website at www.samaritanspurse.org/occ for
ideas, boy and girl box labels, and an informative video. You can start by filling out and coloring the
enclosed letter to put in the shoebox. Also consider if you want your shoebox to go to a boy or girl and
what age group you would like to buy for. There are three age groups: 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. The 10-14 group
sees the least amount of shoeboxes donated so we encourage you to consider them. All shoeboxes need to
be brought to church on or before Sunday, November 20th to make sure that the children receive them in
time for Christmas. If shopping and filling shoeboxes are not for you, we will also accept monetary
donations. It costs $7 to mail one shoebox.
Don't forget to bring your shoebox gift to church on or before
Sunday, November 20th.

What a perfect gift to give in honor of Jesus' birthday!

Keep Me Warm Trees

Once again we are asking the congregation to help to decorate our Keep Me Warm Trees.
Beginning November 20th we will have a tree set up in the Overflow Area and also one in the
Fellowship Hall to receive your contributions. Warm clothing, new or gently
used, such as mittens, caps, jackets, sweaters, scarves, gloves, socks, etc. will be
greatly appreciated. We expect to deliver them to V.O.I.C.E. the week of
December 11-17th. We thank you for all your beautiful items in the past and in
advance for your help this year. There seems to be a great need this year as in the
past.

Dear Mission Partners and Network of Support,

It has now been confirmed through Thai and international news services that King Bhumibol Adulyadej
of Thailand died today (10/13/16) following a lengthy illness. He has been in extremely poor health over
the course of several years.
Throughout his reign the King has been revered in Thailand for his benevolent actions on behalf of the
Thai people. He has taken numerous actions to serve the needs of the rural poor and to be a bridge to
peace in an oftentimes tumultuous society that regularly has experienced military coups. He has served
as King for 70 years (1946 2016), and was the longest serving monarch in the world. He was lovingly
looked upon as a beloved father of the nation. It is anticipated that the Crown Prince will assume the
highest royal title in due course.
During this time of leadership transition, we ask for your prayers for the people of Thailand.
PRAYER REQUESTS FOR THAILAND
1. Pray for peace throughout Thailand during this time of leadership transition
This period of transition in the leadership of the royal family may present opportunities for
persons with self-serving agendas to attempt to create political instability and social upheaval.
In May 2014 a military coup took place in Thailand, and ever since that time the nation has been
under military rule and martial law.
For more than 6 months before the 2014 coup, massive political protests were happening daily in
Bangkok and other parts of the country.
For 12 years ongoing violence in 3 southern provinces has resulted in more than 6,000 deaths and
12,000 persons injured
2. Pray for the people of Thailand as they grieve in this time of national mourning
3. Pray for wisdom for government officials, military, police, and others in positions of power
Pray that those in positions of political influence and national decision-making will exhibit the
same humanitarian values as the king who faithfully has ruled Thailand for 7 decades.
4. Pray for the poor, ethnic minorities, migrant workers, and refugees
In times of social instability and political uncertainty in any society, the poor and the powerless
are often the first persons whose human rights are at risk of being compromised and curtailed.
5. Pray for PC (USA) mission co-workers in Thailand, as well as all other missionaries and humanitarian
workers who seek to serve the people of Thailand.
Thank you for your partnership in mission and prayers for us, as well as for your prayers for the people of
Thailand during this time of national mourning and leadership transition.
In Partnership,
Barry and Shelly

This year our Beaver/Butler Presbyterian Women made the trip to New Windsor,
MD for our Annual Mission Work Trip on Oct. 3-5. In addition to the work we
accomplished while we were there, our Hill P.W. sent 23 School Kits and 25
Hygiene Kits on the bus. They are donated to Church World Service for Disaster
Relief to be distributed to disaster areas in the U.S. and abroad.
When giving information to Elean in our church office please be
sure to call, e-mail, or place the information in her bin. There have
been several instances when pieces of paper with important
information have been found in various places in the office. Please
do not leave anything on Eleans desk. She has a bin right beside the
pastors bin. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
