Medford Township Mayor Jeffrey Beenstock reads a proclamation to Richie Abrams that commemorates his victory over cancer as members of his family standby at his party on Saturday, Oct. 15.

A party fit for a survivor

After beating cancer, resident Richie Abrams Jr. celebrates
in style with a proclamation from Mayor Beenstock
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
Imagine waking up one morning, experiencing a single symptom, visiting the doctor and
soon after being told cancer is
the diagnosis. Unfortunately,

this became a reality for lifelong

Medford
resident
Richie
Abrams Jr., who was diagnosed
with colon and liver cancer in
October 2013. Yet now, after 2.5
years of treatments, he has won
the battle, and, in response, his
family threw him a huge party

on Saturday, Oct. 15 to commemorate his determination.

It was one of those things
that you cant believe it can actually happen to you, Abrams
said. I knew I just had to do
please see MAYOR, page 13

According to the U.S. Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 68 American children
is identified on the autism spectrum. To offer support to these
children, Medford organization
Autism Spectrum Mandate Services, located at 4 Mill Run Court,
works to improve communication, behavior, social, leisure,
self-care, feeding and toileting
skills.
Founded in 2011 by Medford
resident Rebecca Khettry-Clay,
who serves as the organizations
executive director and as one of
its board-certified behavior consultants, hopes to help all participating individuals reach their
maximum potential in the areas
of academics, communication,
social, adaptive, play, leisure and
work-related skills. In doing so,
she has added staff including
other BCBAs, a full-time BCaBA,
three BCBA interns and more
than 30 trained ABA therapists.
Designed for children up to age
21 with autism and other developmental disabilities, the organiza-

tion utilizes current research in

applied behavior analysis to help
develop these skills. It also excels
in evaluating an individuals academic, communication, social,
adaptive, motor and behavioral
strengths and weaknesses to implement programs, using strategies and modifications, within inclusive and self-contained settings.
We provide services to children who have autism in their
homes, and we work on communication, social and behavioral
skills, Khettry-Clay said. Its really important for the community because these children that
were serving now will become
much more independent and able
to live in our community.
Along with ABA and other behavioral autism services, Autism
Spectrum Mandate Services
seeks to assist with the monetary
cost of deductibles and copays to
individuals in need and also to
those individuals without insurance. It also attempts to fund and
provide opportunities for social
activities within the community

Safety first this Halloween

Parents, kids, homeowners and motorists should follow these tips

hosts, goblins, ghouls and a lot

of superheroes, princesses,
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
and characters from Frozen will be
parading up and down streets in town
in less than one week. Halloween is an
exciting time for kids, parents and
neighbors alike.
Its a time for fun, a time for laughter, a time for adorable pictures, a time
for candy, a time for celebration and a
time when we all need to pay attention
to safety.
First and foremost, motorists need
to be extra cautious when driving
through the streets that day, not just in
your own neighborhood, but surrounding ones, as well. Make sure to
be aware of trick-or-treating hours,
and be especially careful when darkness settles in. Be especially alert in

residential neighborhoods, as kids

tend to run excitedly from house to
house.
Parents should be on high alert that
day as well, reminding their kids to
look both ways before crossing the
street and cross only at intersections
and crosswalks, when possible.
If kids are trick-or-treating without
adult supervision, make sure they
know the route so they dont get lost
and confused. Other safety tips, courtesy of the website, www.safekids.org:
Decorate costumes and bags with

reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.

Choose face paint and makeup
whenever possible instead of masks,
which can obstruct a childs vision.
Have kids carry glow sticks or
flashlights to help them see and be
seen by drivers.
When selecting a costume, make
sure it is the right size to prevent trips
and falls.
If you need more tips or tricks of
the trade for trick-or-treating, visit
www.safekids.org.
The local police department will
have safety recommendations, and the
municipality will also have more information about specific rules and regulations for the day.
Be safe this Halloween. And most
importantly, have a scary good time!

Violence, vandalism trending downward for LRHSD

BY BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Lenape Regional High School District
Security and Emergency Management Coordinator James Kehoe gave a report of the
Violence and Vandalism and HIB Reports
to the LRHSD Board of Education on
Wednesday, Oct. 19.
The Violence and Vandalism and HIB
Reports are required to be given two times
a year, once in February for from July to
December of the school year, and once in
October for January to June and total of
the previous school year.
In 2015-2016 from January to June, there
were 23 incidents of violence, three incidents of vandalism and 20 of substance
abuse; there were no weapons and no HIB
incidences.
In violence, there were 10 assaults, three
criminal threats, one threat, seven fights

and two sexual offenses. Of the incidents,

16 charges were filed.
For vandalism, there was one damage of
property and two thefts. Substance abuse
includes 13 confirmed uses and seven possessions of substances.
There were 77 non-duplicated incidences, such as a fight and substance
abuse, this year compared to last years 89.
Seventy-seven is the lowest total in 10 years
at LRHSD, according to Kehoe.
There has been a decrease in incidents
of violence from 40 in 2014-2015 to 36 in
2015-2016; substance abuse from 38 to 27;
and weapons offenses from two to one.
There was a slight increase in HIB incidents from zero to four and no change in
vandalism, as both years had nine.
The weapon was an accident, according
to Kehoe, where a student accidently
brought a pocketknife to school. The student was not charged.

The HIB complaints made were earlier

in the 2015-2016 year. The four incidents include two based on race, one based on physical disability and one based on gender.
Consequences at the LRHSD include suspension, counseling, schedule modifications, cease and desists, shadowing, extra
supervision and charged by police.
Kehoe said the LRHSD does a number of
things to prevent and educate about HIB related instances. Some of the items include
eight student programs such as No Place

Our goal is to have [the autistic children go on to] live independently and have functional,
normal lives. The thing with
autistic kids, and the reason they
are able to progress so well, is because theyre very intelligent
people, Khettry-Clay said. With

autistic people, you can keep

going. They have the capacity to
hit normal or above normal potential cognitively.

these services can be provided in

Mayor honors cancer

survivor at party
MAYOR

Continued from page 1

whatever the doctor told me to do
and keep myself moving.
Fearing the worst, when his
family first heard news of the diagnosis, they promised Abrams
they would throw him the biggest
party when he had finished treatments. They hoped this incentive
would help their beloved relative
fight harder. However, looking
back over the past few years,
Abrams family members recall
his constant optimism and continuous push to maintain his
daily life as what really helped
him to overcome the disease.
[Overcoming cancer] is a big
weight off my shoulders, and its
good to see everyone who has
been there for me, Abrams said.
I want to thank everyone for
their support.
Pushing past more obstacles
and defeating more odds than
ever projected, Abrams moved
forward with his fight with stage
four cancer despite having dialysis every two weeks in Philadelphia at Jefferson Hospital and
eventually going home with a
portable bag that is hooked
through a port that was put in his
chest and feeds the chemo for an
additional 48 hours. He even took
the portable chemo on a hunting
trip nothing could stop Abrams
fight to get better and retain a
sense of normalcy.
Despite being tired, his taste
buds changing and food tasting
different, being colder than most
people during the winter and having his skin become extra dry and
cracking all due to side effects of
chemo, he pushed through and
kept fighting.
Although he was able to overcome the disease, the hardest part
of his journey was having people
ask him how he was all the time
and having to give up his activities of shooting pool and hanging
out with his friends. Regardless,
throughout it all, Abrams continued to work at both the township

and his familys farm.

Born in 1958, Abrams has been
an employee of the Public Works
Department for more than 15
years, remaining committed to
his work and only missing days
on which he had treatments. He
even got permission from his doctors to go back to work with the
portable chemo device, and continued to run his familys farm.
Abrams also continued to make
sure his parents and family were
OK, as he is very close to his
mother, father and other family
members who all live in Medford
within blocks of each other.
For all the service Abrams has
provided to Medford Township
and for beating cancer, Mayor Jeffrey Beenstock agreed to attend
the party and to do a proclamation in honor of Abrams dedication during his fight with cancer.
Being able to be a part of this
is exciting. Its one of the nicer
things I get to do as mayor, Beenstock said. Its definitely a terrific occasion and a reason to celebrate.
Although Abrams knew about
the party, and even helped put together the guest list, he did not
know about the mayors appearance or that he would receive a
proclamation. Additionally, a few
people spoke at the celebration inplease see CANCER, page 14

I believe he is so deserving of

Homeschool student asks LRHSD to play football, board stands by policy

HOMESCHOOL

Seneca High School football team,

despite a policy that makes him
ineligible since he does not attend
the district school.
Adam and his family have
reached out to the district for the
past few months in an effort to get
the policy changed not only for
himself, but other homeschooled
children, and when they heard
nothing, turned to friends, the
community and the media to get
the word out and come to the
LRHSD BOE meeting.
My tax bill says I pay $2,092 in
school taxes Since our money
funds your schools, my son and
other
homeschoolers
really
should have equal access to athletics and activities because they
are students too, Marni Cunard,
Adams mother, said. (LRHSD
says) to be an upstander. Well I
am being an upstander for my
son and other children who are

home schooled, pay their taxes

and would benefit for having the
same opportunities for personal
growth, social interaction, competition scholarships and life influencing experiences as they
would at public schools.
Despite their request and
strong showing at the meeting,
the district stood behind its policy, saying the policy is not meant
to be discriminatory, but ensures
equality for its students.
This policy is not intended to
be, nor is it discriminatory in any
fashion; in fact it levels the playing field by ensuring that all participants in curricular, extracurricular and athletics programs
meet the same rigorous requirements and preconditions for participation in our programs, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm
said.
LRHSD Board Policy No. 2630
states, Students who are educated elsewhere than at school are
not eligible to participate in
LRHSD curricular (e.g. field
trips), extra-curricular (e.g. clubs,

The two-act ballet was choreographed and set to music, composed by Felix Mendelssohn, accompanying Shakespeares play

band) or athletic programs or activities.

As per Birnbohms statement,
students who participate in extracurricular activities are held
to certain requirements for participation.
These eligibility requirements
include such conditions as
achievement of certain grades,
number of credits earned, attendance at school, behavior compliance, as well as following all
LRHSD rules and regulations. If
a student is lacking in any of
these criteria, they are precluded
from participating in these activities and sports.
In a release by the LRHSD, the
programs homeschooled students
follow are individualized programs and are not under the
LRHSD BOEs purview or supervision, nor should they be.
Therefore, LRHSD personnel
have no means of monitoring eligibility preconditions and requirements, or to confirm that all
the strictures mandated of

LRHSD enrolled students, are

met by homeschooled students.
The LRHSD policy helps ensure
that the privilege of participating
in its extra-curricular activities
and athletics is consistent, fair
and open to students who meet
the districts eligibility requirements and preconditions.
Marni said in 27 states homeschoolers have the statutory right
to participate in their local districts athletics, and in 10 other
states homeschoolers may participate, dependent on certain criteria. She also listed six other high
school districts in Burlington
County who allow homeschooled
children to participate in extracurricular activities. The New
Jersey Interscholastic Athletic
Association has guidelines on its
website for homeschool children,
including compliance with the
same standards of behavior and
performance as all other team
members. However, the guidelines also state board approval is
needed.

According to the state Department of Education, the local

board of education is not required by law to allow a child educated elsewhere than at school to
participate in the regular school
curriculum or in extracurricular
or sports activities. Such participation is at the sole discretion of
the board once the child is identified as educated elsewhere than
at school.
Adam, who has been playing
football since he was 5 in Tabernacle, said he would just like to
continue to play football with his
friends. Adam, currently considered a freshman, is young enough
to still play with his Seneca Youth
Junior High League, but next
year will not have the opportunity to do so.
The Cunard family asked the
board to have a full board
discussion of the matter and to
have a vote on it. The board
continued the meeting as
usual after Birnbohms comments.
