Minutes
Childhood Care at WPCCA Meetings
Co-Chair of Youth Development Jennifer Cheeks discussed the format of the
activities that the children will be engaged in during the monthly civic association
meetings. She encouraged all participants to fill out a childhood care survey so she
and her team can receive feedback. For more information, please contact Jennifer

Safety Committee Survey of Street Lighting
The Safety Committee will be conducting the survey for the streets in the Weinland
Park neighborhood. Once the information has been collected, a follow-up committee
meeting will be announced to encourage those who are interested to participate.

Weinland Park Elementary School
Principal Rhonda Peeples of Weinland Park Elementary School and her team of
teachers, administrators, and volunteers discussed how they are addressing the
needs of the children.
Restorative Practice-Based Education System
Principal Peeples and her team discussed the techniques they are using to
help children who have lived through trauma feel safe at school. Types of
restorative practices include: circle process, peer juries, peer mediation,
community conferencing, community service, preventative and post-conflictresolution program, and socialemotional learning. During the school day,
there are opportunities to share feelings, ideas, and experiences, build trust
and understanding, establish positive connections, and set group
agreements/norms, along with opportunities to assess academic
understanding, set up behavior expectations, and help students achieve their
academic goals.
OSU Mentors
OSU Mentors have been participating in this program with Weinland Park
Elementary School since 2013, involving grades one through five in weekly
activities. Ohio State University is one of the thirty-three chapters involving
two thousand kids in a pilot program that was started by former college
students Heidi Schmidt and Kristin Huang, who attended Indian University
and Butler University, respectively.
Site-Based Council Parent Initiatives
Joe Proctor, a volunteer for Site-Based Council Parent Initiatives, is passionate
about engaging families and the community. He discussed the three events
that they have this year: the Father-Daughter Dance in April, Taking Care of

Momma Day in May, and the 3 v. 3 Basketball Tournament in July. He also


discussed the impact that these events have on the participants, the
community, and the volunteers involved.
Capital City Youth Strength & Conditioning
A social worker named Laura Sullivan discussed how Capital City Youth Strength &
Conditioning is providing free or reduced-cost training for youth ages 717 at Ohio
Strength Home of CrossFit Italian Village, 279 E Fifth Avenue. The group training is
focused on strength, flexibility, and aerobic conditioning by certified CrossFit Kit
Trainers and is monitored closely. Classes are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and
Thursdays from 3:30 p.m.4:30 p.m. for ages 1317 and 4:30 p.m. 5:30 p.m. for

Short North Parent Group
Former Weinland Park resident Katie Beaumont discussed the Short North Parent
Group that started two years ago and that she found on Facebook. The group
discusses school options in the area. In January of 2016, the group started to meet
monthly to discuss parenting and non-parenting issues. Meetings have been at
Goodale Park, between the two playgrounds, on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to noon
during the months of October, November, and January. There is no meeting in
December. She is looking at other venues for inclement weather months. For more
