Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE
This act may be cited as the Stem Cell Research Act of 2016.
SECTION 2. FINDINGS
Congress hereby finds and declares that,
1) A stem cell transplant is used to infuse healthy stem cells into the body to stimulate new bone marrow growth,
suppress the disease, and reduce the probability of a relapse.
2) At 100 days post-transplant, the study shows survival significantly improved for patients with myeloid leukemias
receiving related transplants (85% to 94%)
3) Stem cell transplants allow doctors to use higher doses of chemo to kill the cancer than normally would be
tolerated
4) Recent research by U-M Cancer Center scientists found that cells from tumors with a higher percentage of cancer
stem cells were more likely to spread.
5) the bodys own cells can fight cancer by engineering, through stem cells which can be a cancer-fighting immune
system
6) In the Seattle Childrens Hospital, in 2014 95% of patients lived after their stem cell transplant
7) Adult stem cells are working, however there is not enough research on embryonic stem cells and there is a lot of
debate about their humanity.
8) Indian researchers found that patients who had a complete response to the stem cell transplantation had an
average of a 17 year survival rate
9) When an embryonic cell is implanted into an animal it turns into a tumor, which is why it is necessary to mature the
stem cell into an adult one so it is able to be implanted in the correct form.
10) When culturing embryonic cells scientists and doctors are not able to turn off their growth and cell division genes,
so when cancer is already present in the body the stem cells can promote the growth and metastasis of a tumor.
