3 Anti-inflammatory Activity
The albino rats of either sex were divided into eight groups consisting of six
animals in each group. Group 1 received 0.2 ml of 2% w/v carboxy methyl cellulose
suspension orally as a control group, group 2 received 125 mg/kg; orally of methanolic
root extract of Ficus septica, group 3 received 250 mg/kg; orally of methanolic root
extract of Ficus septica, group 4 received 500 mg/kg; orally of methanolic root extract of
Ficus septica, group 5 received 125 mg/kg; orally of methanolic root extract of Ficus
septica, group 6 received 250 mg/kg; orally of methanolic root extract Ficus septica,
group 7 received 500 mg/kg; orally of methanolic root extract of Ficus septica, and
group 8 received 10 mg/kg; orally of diclofenac as a standard drug. Acute inflammation
was induced in all groups by injecting 0.1 ml of 1% w/v carrageenan into the sub-plantar
region of the right hind paw of rats. Mean paw volume was measured 1 hour to
carrageenan injection using plethysmometer and at 0, 15, 30, 60, 120, and 180 min
after the carrageenan injection(Nivsarkar M. et al., 2002; Gaur K. et al., 2008 as cited in
Abhishek Jain et al.,2009). Mean increase in paw volume was measured and percent
inhibition was calculated bu using following formula:
Percent Inhibition= 100 (1-Vt/Vc)
Where,
Vc= Edema volume in control
Vt= Edema volume in test/ standard compound
