CLPNA
COMPETENCY.
PROVIDE AN
EXAMPLE.

The course materials provide through information on all of the above

listed medical conditions and diseases that can affect pediatrics. The
text Maternal Child Nursing Care in Canada provides the most recent
best practices that can aid the beginning practioner in understanding
the complexities of these conditions and how there presentations and
signs and symptoms can differ from adults. The text and PowerPoints
are tailored to providing the student with accurate information and
allows for the application of critical thinking and holistic care.
Specifically in Chapter 46 Respiratory Dysfunctions I felt it very
informative to explore asthma and its presenting signs and symptoms
in children and that the practioner cannot focuses solely on the disease
but also the best way to convey empathy, procedures, and also how to
aid parents and children cope with often new diagnosis. I felt the text
provided excellent information on the disease process as well as
coping skills to utilize with the child and family.

DESCRIBE WHAT
YOU LEARNED
AND HOW IT
RELATES TO THE
COMPETENCY.
EXPLAIN WHY IT
WAS
MEANINGFUL.

I learned the different stages of development and what the best

techniques to employ in order to gain cooperation from the child were
as they move through different stages of development. I also learned
how these particular diseases present differently in children then in
adults. I also felt that learning that children are not just little adults
was key in tailoring my assessment approach, care, and holistic
inclusion of family and the child. This relates to the competency in all
of the diseases and medical conditions that were listed but, specifically
to asthma as an adaptive assessment approach of leaving the child on
the caregivers lap can reduce anxiety and therefore benefit the child
while they are using compensatory measures to cope with an active
asthma attack. This can be very helpful as a practioner I feel I would
have a lot more anxiety in dealing with a pediatric client suffering and
asthma attach then an adult. I feel that being armed so to speak with
lots of different techniques in order to perform an accurate, concise
assessment without causing undo stress and anxiety will be greatly
beneficial for the health of the client.

Assignment 2

Good- I feel that I have a good understanding of the theory behind the
competencies but I feel that I will not reach a level of excellence until
I encounter these conditions in a clinical setting. I feel that the
application of my didactic learning as I encounter these different
presentations will be the only away that I will discover any learning
gaps or areas of improvement. I will also be able to continue to
develop my assessment skills and also different techniques of
distraction or explanation as I encounter different age groups of
children and their family dynamics. Through continued readings of
new best practices and hands on learning I will progress to a level of
excellence as I move out into my working career.
I feel I will apply this in the future as I move into my med/surg
practicum where I may encounter pediatrics. It will be very beneficial
to approach a child in a calm and confident manner and be able to
distinguish some of the subtleties that they can present with when they
are compensating from respiratory distress and other medical
conditions and diseases. I will continue to enhance my didactic
learning through text and online readings and apply my knowledge in
a clinical setting and continue to learn from my instructors, peers, and
other LPNs as I progress through my student career into a working
one. I feel in a rural work setting where I intend to seek employment it
will be invaluable to have a strong understanding of children and their
diseases/ medical conditions as tertiary care is often several hours
away and early intervention can make a significant difference in the
outcome of these children.
