MASTERS PROGRAMME
ENVIRONMENTAL AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Since 1990, CSTM the Department of Governance and Technology for Sustainability of the University of Twente has
been offering courses and masters programmes on environmental and energy management. This international Master
of Environmental and Energy Management was launched in 2000, and since then has trained and educated
participants from all over the world with a variety of educational and professional backgrounds. Environmental and
Energy Management is a central component to improving the environmental performance and energy efficiency of
industries, organizations, regions and / or nations. During the course, modern management and policy tools will be
discussed, as well as the knowledge and skills needed to become an effective researcher or professional in the field.
Participants will work for governmental and non-governamental organizations, will be employed by large companies in
the private sector, or become a consultant for large, small and medium sized enterprises. In the public sector, national
public authorities, provinces, larger municipalities and water authorities will employ them.

OBJECTIVE

The Master programme in Environmental and Energy


Management aims to prepare future decision makers in
companies, government and non-governmental
organizations for analyzing and acting in an
environmentally proactive way when making decisions
about policies, production and resource utilization.

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Graduates will be able to develop, implement, monitor


and evaluate environmental, water and energy
management programmes, policies and projects.

management and consultancy skills; research

cleaner production technologies; energy saving
technologies; sustainable energy technologies; water
technologies, etc.
The course includes lectures, group discussions, group
work, site visits, case studies and a final research project.
Assessments are based on exams, assignments, project
reports and the final research thesis. The Master
programme offers students the possibility to specialize in
three directions: Environmental Management, Water
Governance or Energy Management. After the first joint
part of the programme of about 5 months, the group
splits into these three streams.

GENERAL INFORMATION
DURATION

VISA, INSURANCE AND ACCOMMODATION

Course duration is 12 months (52 weeks) on a full-time


basis. Study load is 65 ECs, that is about 1820 hours.

The course organizers will make the necessary


arrangements. We will contact you for information and
any documents needed.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for participation, applicants should meet the
following conditions:
Have at least a relevant Bachelors degree (if
applicable: 2nd class or higher)
Have a basic understanding of chemistry (high school
level)
Have excellent communication skills
Demonstrate sufficient proficiency in English by means
of a minimum score of 6.5 on the Academic IELTS test.
Internet based TOEFL-iBT scores are also accepted.
The required minimum score for admission is 90.

This Master is offered by CSTM the Department of
Governance and Technology for Sustainability of the
University of Twente. It is administered and executed
off-campus in the town of Leeuwarden, in the North of

TITLE

TUITION FEE & LIVING EXPENSES


The tuition fee is Euro 12,500. This includes course
materials, site visits and several social events. It does not
include living expenses like rent, insurance, food, pocket
money and the costs for the visa. It is the applicants own
responsibility to raise these funds. Please note, the tuition
fee is subject to change, please check our website for
up-to-date information.

The University of Twente is a co-signatory of the Code of Conduct

on www.internationalstudy.nl. The Master of Environmental and
Energy Management received accreditation by the NVAO (DutchFlemish Accreditation Council) in 2008. Our website provides
information on the observations of the accreditation panel. This
accreditation was followed in 2012 by a very positive external
evaluation.

One of the most appealing aspects of this course, to me,


is its international character as well as the high quality of
the programme. Most of the students are from abroad and,
like me, have come here with the purpose of improving
energy supply systems in their home countries by using
smart technologies and natural resources.
