TOWNSVILLE STEAL OVERTIME

WIN OVER DOLPHINS
-------------------------------------------Gosford,NSW | The Townsville Marlins stole victory over
the Central Coast Dolphins in a 19-16 over time
thriller.
The Central Coast Dolphins came into the game
on the back of three straight wins whilst Townsville
were hunting a win to maintain 2nd spot on the ladder.
Things started poorly for the Marlins. There
first possession was three and out and they really
looked confused. Then on the second possession Patrick
Gill was picked as he did not see Linebacker Dean Britt
sitting over the middle spying him. In between the
Dolphins had put together an 11 play drive dominated by
the run with Herschell Hoani powering over the goal line
defence for the score.
The Dolphins are a running football team but
make no mistake the game plan today was to dominate on
the ground. They ran the ball 52 times a season high and
finished with 216 yards. Shaquille Creith became the
Leagues third 1,000 yard rusher and his efforts would
have no doubt wo0n him the starters job for next season.
More importantly the Marlins at times struggled
to contain the Dolphins running backs. "I thought we
adjusted well and look if people want to run on us
during the play offs we will be ready" said Coach Chris
Simpson. With the Dolphins controlling the ball they
also controlled time in possession and the game became
an arm wrestle which suited the home side.
The one time the Dolphins abandoned the run they were
shut down quickly by the pass rush pressure and the
Marlins were able to kick two field goals in quick
succession to get back to 10-9 at the half.
Both teams gave up picks to start the third
quarter and the Dolphins kicked ahead with another field
goal. Townsville needed a spark and Brooke McDonnell was
the player to stand tall. With coverage tight and on
third and short, Patrick Gill showed his bravery when he
dropped back and found McDonnell on a crossing pattern.
A legal rub had gotten him away from Antonio Tamou and
his speed caught everyone else out as he rounded to the
right for the 28 yard score.
The Dolphins went back to the ground heavily
and again they made yards and kept possession. However
the conservative play saw them struggle in the red zone
and they could just come away with another field goal.
With the scores tied the teams could not do
enough to get onto scoring range. Going into overtime
the Dolphins looked the most likely. They won the toss
and again ran the ball up the field. They were stopped
on 4th down and Kicker Shaun Murdoch came on for a 52
yarder. His kick was wide left much to the
disappointment of the home fans.
That was the crack Townsville needed. McDonnell
was again the man to break it open and a deep corner
route saw him get behind the coverage for a 29 yard
pass. This set up Ngatau Graham for the winner and he
maintained his perfect record with a game winning 37
yard field goal.
